Is the jury still "out?"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

.....Perhaps it is over... perhaps those that take that view are in for a surprise down the road. Perhaps the truth is that were still going to have to wait a while to find out if, in fact, y2k is really over.

.....All of that aside, could we possibly get back to some semblance of rational discussion? Ive counted so many posters that Ive never seen here before. Who are they really? Are they the militant pollies that have been getting deleted for the disruptive behavior that is only common to wayward children? Are they the fencesitters that had not the ability to summon up the backbone to commit to one position or the other, while simply waiting until the I told you sos started flying? Would they have come out on the opposite side had things gone badly, (or at least more visible), up to this point?

.....Yes, there were heated debates that went forth from this board, and yes, some folks did have obvious vitriol for each other; but the level of discourse has dropped tremendously just since the rollover. Frankly, Im quite disgusted by the johnny-come-lately posters that feel its their job to hammer Ed Yourdon for what they perceive to be his sins. Ive prepped and spent money for what I had perceived to be troubled times ahead, but the decision was mine, not Mr. Yourdons. In fact, even if y2k is a complete wash, Im in agreement with Paul Milne that the economy is going to come undone in the not-too-distant future. I also think that its far too early to say y2k is over.

.....Please, if you have nothing to contribute other than childishness, refrain.

If you would take the time to read, you would know. Are you as concerned as you pretend to be or just trying to harrass and cause trouble. Did you offer your help to the girl when she was in need?

Please stop asking people to eat crow. It is making my pet crow very nervous

I have come to the conclusion that these people come not so much to harrase, but to see what is the latest on Y2K, because it cannot be found in your local newspaper, or on the local tv network. It can be found here. Tho they are polly in nature the doubt is still there, and they want to try and see if something of significance has come about where they can jumpt to one or the other side of the fence. While here they have to be noticed and by harrassing they can raise some feathers, and that is their intention. It is not to enlighten, but rather to agitate. There will always be those of this nature. One that is wise will ignor them, and if they are egnored enough they will simply fade away, other than to lurk.

first you say "refrain"

then you say "say what you will"

make up your mind ferchrisakes. We look to you for guidance (or guidence)

as to the "jury", they are still out in the streets (or cubicles) doing the "polly dance".

Currently the jury is hung.

Notforlong:

Good points, sound logic. Will ignore 'em too.

Good to see you are well. Happy New Year!

Some of the influx could be attributed to a few mentions on popular radio shows. Drudge mentioned TB2000 on Sunday...he even quoted from the first "I am so ashamed" thread that was posted here. His tone was pretty mocking. Yesterday morning I was surprised to hear TB2000 mentioned by Paul Harvey on his show, also in a sarcastic tone.

I kind've doubt that Drudge or Harvey have been lurking on the forum, so have to wonder who sent them the info...and why? After mentally rounding up the usual suspects, I'll keep my conclusions to myself.

Hi, Patrick,

I've read and responded to many of them. So far, I've seen lots of post 12/31 declarations, but I'm still looking for real explanations from them, other than some variation of, "hey, we're all here, so get over it."

I'm hopeful that when things die down and many of them find themselves bored or decide to get back to their school work, the level of discourse will again increase.

Patrick,

With all due respect, rational discussion has not been the norm on this forum for months (if ever). I am disturbed by the recent flood of individuals who have come to bury Yourdon, not praise him. The reasonable posters seem lost in the deluge... which is exactly how I felt about this forum for the last half of 1999.

By the way, Paul Milne was not predicting an economic downturn... he was predicting the deaths of untold millions (due to Y2K.) It's called revisionist history.
