VCD TIME DISPLAY How the heck can i do this

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

hey whats up? i know it was covered briefly on this site sometime before(to some extent), but i wanted to know how i can get my vcd's to diplay the "time" instead of seeing "pcb play" on my dvd player. i have at least two vcds(a legit and a boot) that both display time. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I've found that the only way to get time displayed is to insert "Sequence Headers" in the mpeg stream. This is accomplished in Xing 2.2 by setting "1 for GOP" in VCD settings, and in LSX 2.5 (and 3.0) with a similar feature (LSX gives the opportunity of select the frequence of sequence headers). This, by way, solves the problem of the errors in VideoPack 4.0 when tring to use the "Entry points". I have some "homegrown" VCD with time display, but I don't remember if I've done them with Adaptec, WinonCd or Nero. But I think this: no sequence headers, no time display. Then try your software. Good luck Brambus

thanks for the info, i have the xing, but what exactly is a sequnece header?

Sequence headers are a way of indexing the mpeg stream. They provide a direct access to the software that shuold position himself in the middle of the stream. I've gone mad trying to make Videopack Entry points working. Every time I tried I received an error like 'Can't set entry point 5 (or 6, or 4 or 9, etc. etc). Using LSX once I set Sequence Headers at "Every 4 GOPS" and received in turn by VideoPack a different error which sounds like "Can't set entry point around 2 seconds the value you chose". Setting Sequence Headers at 1 per GOP finally I had success. (I think the same result would have been reached shifting a bit the Entry Point.) But as I said, until Ligos will not do an Adobe or Ulead plugin, all we have is Xing (not so bad but really not so good ad LSX or Panasonic). By the way setting 1 S.H. per GOP introduces an overhead in the stream that (I think) limits the througput that carries the image data, thus limiting the overall quality. Mpeg streams for VCD are limited at a fixed (and low) rate. Excuse my poor english. Greetigs Brambus boundary
