Can't Find It In My "World Wide Webster:...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Please educate me!!! What's a "polly"? Is it the opposite of "doomer"? (That one's kind of obvious) I'm new to this site...does that make me a "lurker"?? Is "polly" short for "Pollyanna" or "polly" wanna cracker? Please advise...now that Y2K has rolled over I want to expand my literary horizons!

Do you like to mudwrestle?

I am SO glad you asked! I've been wondering myself. I come here on my nights/days off and love it! But I don't know what a lot of the "lingo" means, either. I want to know what a "troll" and a "robot" are, too.

(I guess it WAS pretty naive of me, though, to think you couldn't use profanity here....why can't they just block those people?)

AGHGHGH!! I didn't mean yes I like to mudwrestle!! (Do you?) for heaven's sake....

Dang KOS, I thought there for a second you had a hot one!!!

Oh, my goodness - talk about bad timing... but really, can you explain some of the jargon used here to those of us who are new so that we can understand a little more of the posts?

No one's answered. Odd. Okay, here's a Starter Kit:

Polly... Short for "Pollyanna." One who believes, like Candide, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and nothing's going to happen with Y2k and nothing was ever going to happen with Y2k and the DOW will reach 35,000 before the end of the week and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Doomer... Derivative of "Doom 'n' Gloom." One who believes that Y2k is going to lead to complete and total meltdown of the global division of labor and even worse, will result in a shortage of Cheesy Poofs at the 7-11. As a general rule of thumb, one who doesn't decessarily buy all the happy-face talk coming out of the mainstream media.

Lurker... Someone who just reads and seldom posts -- one who "lurks." You knew that already, didn't you?

TEOTWAWKI... The End Of The World As We Know It. Not necessarily meaning that Earth is going to be consumed in a giant hairball, but that things are going to change dramatically because of this. Time will tell.

BITR... Bump In The Road. What -- so far -- Y2k is seen as being. Time will tell.

KOS... Spanish royalty with a healthy fixation on mudwrestling. But you already found that out.

That'll get you started. You'll pick up the rest as you go along.

I like you people - it's ALL here....

Violence, sex..or mudwrestling to KOS, intrigue, frustration, guilt, name-calling, etc., etc. And, just as Eileen & I have discovered, educational, too!

I couldn't wait to get home from work to read this site! Oh no, I think I've got it....yes, I definitely do. I'm no longer a lurker! I'll probably end up a post-junkie - hoping to get an answer/response to something I've typed just for the "thrill." Either that, or I need to get out more... ~:-\

Thank you for your answers...I posted again (for the "umpteenth" time) because for some reason, which I AM CERTAIN IS NOT Y2K RELATED, some of my email messages and web pages do not show up in a timely manner...anyway, apologies to Arnie and others who got frustrated with me...and thank you to those who did "enlighten" me. (Also: Note to Arnie-No offense taken...keep up the good work! )

One comment though...how can "pollies" be so nasty! An ill-tempered polly is an oxymoron! Ask Hayley Mills!

Looking forward to the "Toilet-Paper Chronicles", though! I've already started on the companion volume, "2K Uses For Quack-Quack Tape" OR "How I Used Duct Tape to Save The World!"

Time to go...the mud is starting to cake-up between my toes!
