Did y2k teach us anything? Afraid not ...world just as screwed up now as before!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

What it comes down to is y2k had divided us further instead of bringing us together. Is 2000 that much better than 1999. It's all perspective people. Question.. Is life only better because you have a bigger house, better job, better car...more more more. Is greed, envy, lust for ones ownself all there is. Please god, make sure my 401k is ok and my stock market ok and screw everyone else. Is this what 2000 is like. We have not learned one thing from all this then children.

Answers

We transferred our money out of stocks and bought something better than gold: two Harley-Davidsons. We also got a big truck with a camper and a trailer to carry the hogs. No crying here, we are enjoying life now, hell wid it. BTW, the hogs are Y2K ready...

Y2k was never a awakening to me, although I did learn some things about myself and the fragilities of our infrastructure.

Y2k was about a possible trouble-making event, planning for it and then weathering it and getting past it.

Its coming to an end and we are doing ALOT better than many of us thought we would. When it seems like its over, it will be over. If you are looking for a change in society or a spiritual awakening you are looking at this event all wrong.

I learned that people that profess to know, with all their credentials, degrees, and years of experience...don't really know jack. They have opinions, just like everyone has an asshole. I'm surprised this discussion forum is still alive.

What are you talking heads holding out for now? 29 Feb 00? Face it...Y2K did not turn out the way you said it would, despite your endless "cut and paste" of every Y2K negative article you could glean from the world press. And the way you verbally attacked anyone who dared to express a view different than your own. I'm very thankful that Y2K was a non event. The majority of those posts I have read over the past year from those that agreed the world would end, have so much hostility inside them, they couldn't pass a mental health test with a cheat sheet in front of them.

I've learned that its obvious that a lot of folks cannot think for themselves. I've learned that they rather assign blame. I've learned that they have no respect for opinion that differs from theirs. I've learned that some think that being right is more important than being grateful.

But don't you see it yet. These people on this site aren't just believing or professing all computers will fail, they are HOPING they fail. They are wishing that everything collapses and only themselves and a few choice nutcases survive to repopulate the planet once they crawl out from their pathetic, stench-ridden bunkers.

Don't worry, in a month, maybe two. All of these nuts will forget all about Y2K and be up to their old tricks of blaming the Jews or the Blacks for all of their problems.

At least this time they picked an inanimate object on which to project their hatred.

Sincerely, Bill

Mic:

I envy your artistry with words. Would have taken me half a book to make the same point much less clearly. Well said.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), January 04, 2000.

it appears to little 'ol me that this is the one time in the entire history of the world that EVERYONE cross/international borders co- operated together to prevent catastophic failures.

And it was greatly successful... favors were traded and still are being traded in getting things fixed.

How can that not be positive? screw the trolls.

-- KatInSeattle (YouC@ntSpamMe.com), January 04, 2000.

Bill I do see it and I do get it. What you and others fail to realize is that you cannot generalize about everyone who writes in this forum. I know why I am here -- for information and thoughtful comments and opinions, but more importantly, why are you here? If it bothers you (and others) so much that there are some on this list that are hoping for failure, that there are some on this list that are forever pessimists, then I think that you are wasting your time.

That's why all this labelling of folks as pollys and doomers is defeating. Not everyone neatly fits.

-- Mello1 (Mello1@ix.netcom .com), January 04, 2000.

I don't care if you are mad with Gary North Honky, but don't take it out on me. I am not intimidated by your useless cussing. And, BTW, I have read his site. For over a year now. I see it differently.

You see? I can respond without insulting you or cussing at you.

-- Mello1 (Mello1@ix.netcom .com), January 04, 2000.

Despite the fact that you are still insulting me, I will answer you. It's call opinion. I don't recall them calling folks a fraud. I'm sure that they were frustrated from time to time when answers regarding Y2K compliance were not so forecoming from some sectors. I don't think that they wanted you to eat dirt because they disagreed with you.

I read in your latest post (up above) that you believe that your abrasive comments are appropriate when folk like North, Yourdon, etc. scare the (you know what you said) out of people.

Gee, I wasn't scared, but they sure as heck scared you, didn't they?

Thank goodness that it wasn't doomsday. Your panic would be dangerous to others.

-- Mello1 (Mello1@ix.netcom .com), January 04, 2000.

I'm sorry, all, but this one DID make me laugh:

"they couldn't pass a mental health test with a cheat sheet in front of them."

May I use that sometime?

I've just stumbled across this forum in the past two days, so obviously I don't have the personal historical perspectives about what went on here, but from what I can gather right now...

1) There are a couple missing-in-action Y2K messiahs

2) There are some still-angry, believing, never say die "doomers"

3) There are some dissilusioned, my-eyes-are-now-open ex-doomers very angry at above mentioned messiahs

4) There are some "polly's", which I take to mean "Pollyanna's", very angry at above mentioned doomers and looking for payback for something, presumably a long period of dissing in this forum.

Does that cover it? If that's accurate, here's my advice (Oh boy, more advice, huh? :^)

1) These messiahs (North, whoever else) should be accountable, maybe sued, at the very least ignored from here on out.

2) The NSDD (Never Say Die Doomers) should realize that they've probably been living in an idealogically closed environment (this forum, wacked-out talk radio, whatever else) for a long period of time and need to get some air. This is not entirely a slam, just the truth.

3) The DD's (Dissilusioned Doomers) should find whatever value they can in this experience and move on. Maybe getting out of forums like this is a good start. You have a stronger B.S. meter now, that's a good thing!

4) The I-told-you-so'ers should realize they won't ever convert the NSDD'ers; they will just move on to the next conspiracy theory or end-of-the-world scenerio anyway. In the meantime, maybe show some compassion for the DD'ers - they're too easy of a target now.

Bemused,

"2) The NSDD (Never Say Die Doomers) should realize that they've probably been living in an idealogically closed environment (this forum, wacked-out talk radio, whatever else) for a long period of time and need to get some air. This is not entirely a slam, just the truth."

Your opinion....which is not necissarily the truth.

"3) The DD's (Dissilusioned Doomers) should find whatever value they can in this experience and move on. Maybe getting out of forums like this is a good start. You have a stronger B.S. meter now, that's a good thing!"

Mine is in the red zone after reading your post!!

Why do you feel free to give advice when, by your own admission, you have only been reading this forum for 2 days? Why don't you use your real address? Have something to hide????????

Do I smell troll?? Yep, thought so.....

-- Lynn Ratcliffe (mcgrew@ntr.net), January 04, 2000.

Honky Lips,

I understand your anger, but I must point out to you that it is irrational. First, If your friend's marriage is so strained now, it's because it wasn't solid enough to begin with. It happens that it is Y2K that rip it's weak seems, but sooner or later a more common straining event would have done the same, be financial downturn, a major long illness of a family member, death or other such stressful to marriage events.

Second, you're simply jumping on the band wagon of blaming anyone that warned about Y2K for the actions of individuals and your own. No one forced you or your friend to prep, to "believe" anything. You and your friend are adults and responsible for what you believe or not, what you understand or not. Blaming Ed Yourdon, Infomagic or Gary North for "scaring" your friend is like blaming me as a nurse for scaring you were I to enlighten you about all the medical risks that you take everyday. People everyday take the risk of catching a fatal disease or falling fatally ill from the actions/inactions we do out of ignorance or carelessness, some of us are just more ignorant than others. But most people won't blame the medical field for their own ignorance and lack of precautions. Why should it be different with the Y2K issues?

You should, like the rest of us, own up to your own mistakes, and let your friend own up to his. Breath deep and think things over. Your anger should subside.

Not only you

-- Chris (catsy@xxx.com), January 04, 2000.

That last "not only you" was not part of my post, have no idea how it got there. hmmm...

-- Chris (catsy@xxx.com), January 04, 2000.

Lynn,

Don't know exactly what "troll" means, unless it's the traditional meaning. Doesn't sound good, in any case.

I've posted a couple times to this forum since 1/3. The first time I heeded the admin's request on the posting page and used my real address, which resulted in one spam-like solicitaion and one rather unfriendly personal message. Then I noticed that 90% of the people who post here do not use their real address & decided to take a lesson. That's it, nothing to hide.

As to why I'm giving advice after only 3 days at this forum? Two reasons, I guess. First, I thought that a fresh perspective from the "outside world" might be useful. Second, I also have a friend who seems to have spent a good deal of money (don't know how much) on preparations, and though her husband went along with it and it didn't strain their marriage, it kinda changed her relationship with her friends. Basically, we couldn't talk sense into her, it seemed like she was being manipulated in some manner. That's not a fun thing to observe when it's your friend. When I found this forum I felt that I understood the kind of environment she may have let herself slip into, and wanted to speak my mind a little, maybe hold up a mirror for some folks who need to look in one.
