For fair/educational use... Six Turk firms suffer Y2K bug, most have fixed it

ISTANBUL, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Six Turkish companies on Tuesday said they had suffered minor problems from the millennium computer bug which they had fixed or were taking steps to correct.

The Istanbul stock exchange said earlier that durables producer Arcelik , textile firm Akin Tekstil , kitchen appliances makers Emsan Besyildiz and Emsan Paslanmaz , and breweries Erciyas Biracilik and Guney Biracilik had reported problems relating to computers that could not recognise the year 2000.

Four of the companies -- Arcelik, Akin Tekstil, Erciyas and Guney -- later told the exchange they had fixed the problems.

"The problem on all accounting, financial bookkeeping and personal computer systems have been removed," said Guney Biracilik in a statement. Similar reports came from Erciyas, Arcelik and Akin Tekstil.

Sister companies Emsan Paslanmaz and Emsan Besyildiz said the problem in some of their old computers persisted but had not caused them to stop production.

"The problem was detected only on some very obsolete computers and can be resolved with an estimated $5,000 spending," a joint statement from the companies said.

The six companies' shares resumed trading on Tuesday along with those of 275 others which had earlier reported no problems from the Y2K bug.

The bourse said trading in four firms -- textile firms Koytas and Soksa , hospital chain Sevgi and spare parts maker Parsan -- was suspended until they reported their Y2K status to the exchange.

Ground handling company Celebi , which sent in a report on Tuesday saying its systems were bug free, would resume trading on Wednesday, the exchange said.

The exchange re-opened on Tuesday following the New Year holiday and a day of Y2K tests on Monday which showed its own systems were running smoothly.
