Air Force reports minor problems suspected linked to Y2K

The Associated Press 1/3/00 5:30 PM

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- The Air Force on Monday reported several minor computer problems suspected to be related to Y2K.

The Air Force Materiel Command, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has been monitoring Air Force computers since last week. AFMC is responsible for keeping Air Force aircraft and weapons systems ready for combat.

Mike Self, director of the AFMC command center, said there was a problem with an inventory control system that keeps track of munitions at one location. Officials were able to monitor the munitions manually and by using an alternate way of running computers.

Self also said there were problems with an internal communication system that connects Defense Department facilities. The problems, at three locations, did not prevent communication.

Self said the problems were expected to be fixed by Tuesday.

Amazing. A bona fide "Self"-reported incident of going manual.

Dam, Ron you beat me to that one.

If these were such minor glitches, how come they are reporting them, not just fixing them?

Most Mil I know are loathe to report problems.

So two minor problems get reported up-stream and picked up by AP.

"Curiouser and curiouser" said Alice to the cat.
