OT: Completely OT, but HELP! What's a RPCRT4.DLL file?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I got two manucripts to get out early a.m. Suddenly my 2 month old (working fine all this time) printer won't work: "Failed to Initialize" and, everytime I hit Ctl P, the tower (of Babal) makes this very low rumble- Lots of cursing going on here. So, I hooked the printer up to my laptop and it's humming away just fine. I shut down the desktop and turned it back on and got this dang RPCRT4.DLL thing and, boys and girls, it's Greek to me. Has the old Aptiva finally bit the dust? How hard should I kick it? (Why, oh why, doesn't it ever act up when I'm not under a deadline?) - Should I call that "Guy" who comes over and looks at me like I'm a senile old dolt, and talks to me like all my screws are loose, then charges me up the yoohoo? Or is there something simple I should have done, or can do? Anyone?

Casey,

What operating system are you running on. Right click "My Computer", select properties, and tell me what it says under system.

Tom, Tom, thank you!

It says "Microsoft Windows 95, 4.00.950a IBM Aptiva Pentium 16.0MB RAM

Is that it?

Hi Casey,

What OS do you run? Win/95? Win/98? Win/NT? I have the resource kits for all of these at work, and I'll try to remember to check tomorrow, if it's a native Win file. It may be specific to your printer, so you could try reinstalling your printer driver.

Also, can you give us a little better description than "this dang RPCRT4.DLL thing" <:)=

Hummm, quick answers!

I just searched on my machine (Win/95B, not A) and I don't have it. Try the driver reinstall, ald let us know if it helps. <:)=

Sysman, you doll, Okay, when I turned it on a box came up and said: RPCRT4.DLL file cannot start. Check file to determine problem. To which I replied, "Yeah, I'll get right on that Xeno." So I just hit the 'X' and the box went away.

Driver reinstall...translated, means put the printer cd back in the hole and do it like I did before when I first got it? Yes? Okay. I'll try it now.

Casey...the Windows extension DLL is either missing or messed up...I just searched and have it on my computer...you want me to Email a copy? It's 12:17 here, so I don't know how late it is there...will watch my Email for you for a bit... satanta@zdnetmail.com

Repost here if you want it and send me a mail and I'll shipt it to you ASAP!

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Casey,

I also have a copy on one of my machines, date 09/18/1997 12:00 am, size 3032KB. Let me know if you need anything.

-- Tom (tcgmtnman@spiralcomm.net), January 04, 2000.

Satanta & Tom,

How nice! You realize, of course, I have no idea what you're talking about, but if it can get from your machines to mine, via e-mail or some such thing, I would be very grateful. I am assuming it will magically absorb itself into the tower (of Babal's) bloodstream and effect a cure.

Casey

wow...mines only 198kb......

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Sorry, size typo...302KB

Casey,

Did you try to re-install your printer driver software, if that didn't cure it...I can send you the file with instructions on how to put it where it belongs (saving the old one first just in case).

-- Tom (tcgmtnman@spiralcomm.net), January 04, 2000.

not quit as nice as a real chat....Tom- we might send both...they'll go in the same folder... Windows:System. but depending on her OS version, one or the other might not run. Maybe put the smaller one in and see, then if neccesary, put in the other. Mine's a bit older than yours ['95]

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Santanta,

Maybe we should have Casey go to the C:\Windows\System folder and right click on RPCRT4.DLL, check the properties and tell us the version number...that way we could be sure.

Okay Everybody, I've switched over to the laptop and I'm not installing the printer again. I've typed a test page....YAHOOOOO!!! It printed!!! It really did it! I'm so happy!! I had a terrible vision of having to sit in burlap at a stone table with a quill pen and a sign above my head that read: "Scribe"

Thank you lovies! Now about the DLL Deal.

-- Casey DeFranco (caseyd@silcom.com), January 04, 2000.

Ooops, got too excited. I meant "I'm NOW installing...." Okay, now I'm going to the C windows system thing....

-- Casey DeFranco (caseyd@silcom.com), January 04, 2000.

Okay, the folder thing says, "Application Extension - SYSTEM - 197KB (202,240 bytes) - RPCRT4.DLL - created: unknown - Modified 9/11/95 9:50:00 AM - Accessed: Monday, January 3, 2000

Okay, I'm hyped-up! Now, what?

-- Casey DeFranco (caseyd@silcom.com), January 04, 2000.

Tom...that is a good idea. Wish I'd a thought of it...I Emailed the DLL from my sys already.

Casey...reloading the printer drivers may not help. This DLL is most likely a Windoze DLL rather than a printer specific DLL....

keep us informed tho.

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Okay, sounds like it's your version Satanta, but I'm not sure she needs it if the notebook is working now. What about the printer driver reinstall on the original computer. Did that fix it.

-- Tom (tcgmtnman@spiralcomm.net), January 04, 2000.

Sounds like Satanta's version may be the one. Did you reinstall yet, and if so, does the printer work? <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), January 04, 2000.

It is a "remote proceedure call" library. If your computer is not networked -- delete all references to network settings except dial-up adapter and tcp/ip. (right click on the network neighborhood icon and select properties). You probably have "Client for Microsoft Networks" loaded in the network properties....

Another way to get to the network settings dialog is through the control panel... remove CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS

Casey...make sure it came thru the Email intact...198kb or whatever...

It's a basic drag and drop...but remember-you have to say 'yes' if it asks to replace existing RPCRT4.DLL.

goto: C:/Windows/System. and shove that monkey in there....~s~

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Opps... forgot one thing.. .make sure the printer is not shared out...

1. "un-share" it under the printer settings

2. Remove File and Print Sharing from the network settings dialog

Glad to hear it Casey!

That'll be $150.00 (grin).

Happy new year! <:)=

Righteous Mama!!!! ~GGGG~

Wish I had as much success getting my printer to work...it's hard being a photographer and having neccesary equip not working....can't load images on my website...that hurts!

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 04, 2000.

Okay,

Had to go to another machine. Glad to hear you got your system's working. I dumbly used my real e-mail address, think it may have got hacked, having problems with my regular server...can't retrieve e- mail pop3 error...DNS lookup not working....oh well live and learn.

-- Tom (tcgmtnman@problems.com), January 04, 2000.

Tom...might just need to clear your cache or let your server rest. They may be working on the Email at the moment...usually this time of day is when they do so. I use a secondary Email...nothing in it but SPAM and the occasional email from people that are too stupid to use my main email or from people I don't trust to have it. Got no Email list...just the inbox. Luck with it in the morning...my website host is acting up since the rollover..
