Was listening to news from New York FOX ,telling travelers to check with Kennedy And LA Graudia Airports for flights going out. Seems their computers are out,and have been for some time. News readers mentioned it wasn't sure if it's Y2K related. But it is hairy out there in the skys over New York ,right about now...

Nothing is Y2K related--just a lot of coincidental problems.

Just tuned in to 1010 AM (WINS news radio) out of NYC: according to them, computers are down at Logan in Boston, creating up to 70-minute delays at NY airports. They are recommending that passengers call ahead before taking the ride to the airport.

Well, which is it? Logan glitch or NY glitch?

Or Chicago? See thread below: "Power Surge in Chicago Leaves Air traffic Controllers Staring at Blank Screens"

I saw the same report. The computer problems are at Logan and in New Hampshire; they're using backups. Causing delays out of the New York area, and presumably elsewhere. They probably emphasized NY because it was a local newscast.

Is this bad luck?

Computer Malfunction Delays Flights

The Associated Press

Monday, Jan. 3, 2000; 10:44 p.m. EST

BOSTON A computer malfunction at an air traffic control center in New Hampshire delayed flights at East Coast airports Monday night.

The malfunction occurred at the Federal Aviation Administration's Boston Center in Nashua, N.H., around 7 p.m., WFXT-TV in Boston reported.

Departures and arrivals at Logan International Airport in Boston were delayed by at least 30 minutes Monday night because of the malfunction, according to airport officials.

Officials at Logan said the problem was fixed by 10 p.m. and that everything was expected to be back to normal by Tuesday morning.

The extent and cause of the problem were not known and the FAA did not return messages seeking comment.

The Boston Center controls flights over more than 160,000 square miles of air space from the Atlantic Ocean to western New York and from the Canadian border to south of Long Island in New York.

Departing flights at Kennedy International Airport in New York City and Newark International Airport in New Jersey were delayed by up to 75 minutes, said Sgt. Reinaldo Gonzalez of the Port Authority police. Shorter delays were experienced at La Guardia Airport, also in New York City, Gonzalez said. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey runs all three airports.

Go here for info. on the power surge. http://www.michaelhyatt.com/discuss/ubb/Forum35/HTML/000237.html Sorry, I am linking impaired.

I have to ask WHY THE GENERATORS on a normal system(I am assuming they don't always run on generator power)?

Oops, I didn't scroll all the way down the page before jumping in. Sorry!

From working in a ARTCC for 17 years the generators are supposed to kick in several minutes after a commercial power outage. (Air Route Traffic Control Center)

I guess Jane Garvey got down just in time!

By the way, it's not Y2K: Gary North's "latest Links" page has a December 13 post titled "Y2K Will Not cause Problems in New York State"
