Time to Shut Down the TB2000 Forum

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Folks, its truly time to put this forum to bed. Everything that can be said has been said, at least twice. People have prepped or not prepped but its done. These's no longer an academic exchange of ideas here, just capping for the sake of capping.

Nothing that can possibly be said here will change the outcome, thus what's the point? The infrastructure didn't collapse, banks didn't implode today. No one seems to have assumed room temperature. Sure, it could still happen, but the chances are exceedingly small.

Gary North said over and over that "its already too late." He was wrong.

Would someone please untie this person from their chair and let them leave? It's not fair to force them to contribute to a forum they don't believe in.

Translation:

"I walked into the battlefield, a bullet whizzed by my head and missed me. I now know that the battle is won, the war is over, we are victorious, and I am immortal, because the first bullet fired at our side missed."

Oh, and just out of curiosity, who died and left *you* final arbiter of what is and is not prudent for the rest of the world to discuss?

Another clueless "shut down" "dying" proclamation. LOL!

-- rotflmao (300,000+@posts.keep rolling), January 03, 2000.

Ron,

I've always had kind words to say to and about you and your post. I won't change that. In fact the "capping for the sake of capping" wasn't intended for you. There are about a dozen people who regularly post on this forum, from both sides, whose opinions I read and carefully consider.

As to "putting the forum to bed" I didn't say what "you" (ustedes form)should do so. I simply said that its time to do so, and I shall.

The bottom line for me are the postings since the site crashed on the 30th. Its turned into a capping war slugfest with little informational content. Ergo...

Adios a ustedes - deportanse bien.

I agree. The Peter Principle applies--TB2000 has reached its level of incompetancy. Phil Greenspun, they shoot horses don't they?

The irony is that, once TB2000 is done, Debunkers will be done too. After all, their goal is to debunk the fallacies here.

In the meantime, I remain addicted to all of this (but very glad that many of the predictions here turned out to be so wrong)

unreal disconnect here. i guess you are right, there is obviously no point in going on. no need to track the hundreds (possibly thousands yet to come) of glitches that seem to be amounting to "Y2K is over" in the media. no need to provide one of the few outlets for the truth since the media refuses to tell it.

my suggestion would be for you to move on if your attention span has reached its limits. mine hasn't. i plan on staying for the next few weeks/months to watch the drama unfold.

here,here! TT

As Dale Way said in his latest Post "The Fat lady isn't even on stage yet..."

and this guy ISN'T a Doomer!!

Need somewhere to get info and news update. The news either leaves out info or gets it completely wrong.

Local paper AZ Republic decides to print that Cindy McCain was snubbed by Prez and 1st Lady New Year's weekend while visiting White House. Mrs. McCain is on radio this AM and asked about it. Guess McCains had their 4 children in town and White House couldn't accommodate that many, so the McCains didn't go to the White House. Little hard to be snubbed if she wasn't even there. She had no idea why the paper stated such.

Sorry, but I think there's better accuracy here.

Excellent idea Darby! I agree, we should go back to burying our heads in the sand and just trust the media to tell us the outcome. I think this proposal of yours takes the cake.

Aren't you even a little bit interested in knowing just a bit more about the outcome? I am and think that this forum is indeed a place to get it from "another source".

The media spin both before and after Y2K has been incredible. Continuing to lean upon the biased, leftist media on something so important to our way of life as the actual, factual results of Y2K is a DUMB idea. Not that you suggested it, but the result of dropping this forum in favor of burying our head once again into the sand is a BAD IDEA.

Keep this forum up and running. It serves a highly informative and useful purpose, even if it eventually proves us doomers wrong. Let's allow the facts to be presented here, bit by bit. I can take it, so can the rest of you. This forum is a great place to check the pulse of what is actually happening and how people are responding to the information. You can't get that on the Communist News Network.

One reason to keep this forum active is that this forum, with over 300,000 postings is number one of the Greenspun board. Number two is the prep forum with over 14,000! (The third highest has less than 10,000 messages, which is pretty good...) A second point is that the forum will die...when people stop posting here.

Finally, it is interesting to note that although the Pentagon stated that DoD had no failures, a "serious" failure was announced some time later...after it had been fixed. I suspect that many more failures have occurred, but the system "owners" aren't about to announce them until they are fixed. To do so would undermine the defense posture (if military), citizen credibility (if government), or corporate value (stock price, if business).

Thank you one and all. I expected to get flamed in the beginning, but in the end I got what I wanted: people posting thoughtful, well prepped ideas without capping. Keep it up. Its the insightful posts that gave life to this forum before the crash of the 30th.

-- Darby (DarbyII@AOL.com), January 03, 2000.

Not time for the forum to shut down, but perhaps it is time for everyone to take a moment to think before they post. There's lots of things being said on both sides, that may return to bite people on the butt, in coming weeks.

On the doomer side, people eager to escape the stings of all the "I told you so's" (a universal irritant), are making some statements that might tend to stretch credibility a bit.

On the pollie side, lot's of really evil karma is being piled up, if there should be any change in the situation as it unfolds.

Like Chuck once said, gently stroking the backspace key is a great way to keep your foot out of your mouth.

Unless Greenspun takes it down, this forum will still be visible two years or more from now. People are STILL posting to the Titanic forum.

Heck, I'll bet Flint is still arguing in 2002 that he was REALLY right about Y2K and Decker will be claiming that a frugal lifestyle is *still* the way to go.

I'm above all that kind of thing myself ....

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), January 03, 2000.

I'll quit when you all quit, until then, I'll check in everyday. Lurking and occasionally responding. Best source of "up to the minute" news ever created.

The analysis, so intelligently presented from all sides makes this forum an invaluable tool to be utilized and appreciated for hopefully a long time to come.

Darby...Feel free to leave, we don't need the distraction. Don't let the door hit you in the ass (why are you hanging around anyway).

-- Don Kulha (dkulha@vom.com), January 03, 2000.

I didn't mean to bite your head off, I just read your statement as Silly Talk, demanding that the forum be shut down (long before the final verdict is in).

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), January 03, 2000.

Darby, your "spurring" of the forum and the results (oddly enough, not what you'd expect) are why I come to this forum. Phil Greenspun's experiment in electronic community is a rousing success as far as I and my family are concerned. We read the posts, make up our minds, laugh a bit, cry a bit when misfortune befalls one of us and just overall generally enjoy the company. It is the sense of community that has been generated over the last short period of time that ties all of the old timers together. I suspect that you will find this forum still hanging in there a couple of years from now.

The fact that Phil and Ed allowed the posters pretty much free rein to direct the conversations in whatever direction they happened to go has allowed the forum to be a 'melting pot' of ideas and a good place to relax. My thanks to them for allowing this forum to exist.

OBTW, you're welcome to stir things up like this anytime....just don't do it too often.
