Panasonic encoder problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Can anyone give me a rough idea why the Panasonic encoder might knock off your video and audio sync after converting?? Here is what i do i convert from mpeg 3000 bit to the vcd 115 bit. i throw on some filters and i get not a bad looking vcd at all. But sometimes for some films (i will do no more then 60-75min at a time) after the 4 plus hour conversion, i play it back and the sync is off. Its starting to drive me crazy. At first it was just one film, but now its two. I have made previous vcds using the same method and at 75mins with no problems. i was thinking could it have something to do with using a too strong filter??? thanks

Doug Hi

It could be a result of the way in which the source file is generated. I use NLE editing programs like Premiere or VideoStudio (regretably) to prepare the file for encoding and one of the output options is the business of sync for the sound track. I have always used interleave the sound at 1 frame intervals and that has not ever lead to a problem with sound going out of sync.

I am not a my home site so I cannot check, but I do not think the stand alone encoders have that option listed. The plugin versions for premiere etc I believe would. Even Videostudio 3 has that option from its timeline.

I do not know if you have the equivalent of a NLE timeline based edit program but it may be an option to get one that has those all important output options to prevent the heart aches after conversion. I do not know how the multiplexing of video and sound is achieved so I cannot be of much help here.

I do not think filtering of the video effects the output, in the conversion every frame will need to be separately encoded and unless it was originally controlled it may go off during that process. Others may have other ideas on a solution.

Hey Ross thanks for the info. Im going to tinker a bit with the set frames on the encoder and see what that does.
