Possible Y2k glitch in small business?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

One of the people who lives here at the Oscar Romero Catholic Worker House works for a small business that repairs and refinishes pools. winter is actually a busy time for them. They didn't work today because they can't get into their headquarters, something crashed in their security system and the doors wouldn't open today. Presumably they will figure out an easy workaround and be back to work soon, and there is no evidence so far it is a Y2k problem. . . except that it apparently originally occured in January 1st.

A fairly large proportion of the actual GICC reported glitches so far involve security systems. What you describe is *almost certainly* y2k-related.

One question: is the security system standalone? Note that if there are digital HVAC and/or fire alarms and/or elevators it is probably NOT standalone (beware in that case). But if it is standalone, it could be a candidate for "encapsulation", rolling the dates back 28 years (or whatever you can roll it to, if it is not 28, note that there could be some day of the week problems).
