Rebate checks to be late because of high-tech glitch

By Associated Press, 1/3/2000 14:44

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Rebate checks for as many as 260,000 Connecticut residents, most of them retirees, will arrive several weeks late due to a high-tech glitch, state officials say.

The state Department of Revenue Services must recreate an address list for nearly half of those rebate recipients because an electronic list supplied last fall by the federal Social Security Administration was flawed, tax department spokeswoman Ellen Schneider said.

''We've got to go through the list and verify the information with all the rebate checks,'' she told the Journal-Inquirer of Manchester.

And because Revenue Services like every other state agency and department had been devoting its data-processing resources to safeguarding against year 2000 computer problems, resorting the list was given a secondary priority, she said.

Schneider said that the department is committed to getting all of the remaining checks sent out as soon as possible but it may be late February before all the $50 rebate checks are delivered.

That sound like a "vehicle hit a utility pole" problem.
