Where are the Freight Trains

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I live just south of a major rail artery (Near Brunswick, MD). Friday the amount of rail traffic was huge. Since Saturday the freight traffic has virtually stopped. Anyone else near a railroad artery experiencing either no or greatly reduced rail traffic?

Before rollover about 15 to 20 trains a day in Harrisburg AR. Now there are maybe 2 or 3 a day.

I lve about 1/2 mile from the Conrail yard in Elkhart IN. ( one of the biggest yards) and they have been moving but it seems like they are not up to normal. I am going to check today after work and see if there is still alot backed up waiting to go. Does anyone know where I can get the scanner freq. for Conrail??

I live in West Virginia, and my wife and I have not heard one freight train whistle since Friday. We usually hear some each night and night.

I am miles from any train tracks. Think we have two north and south tracks in Florida. But I find this a far more interesting thing to watch than bank glitches. The trains were so screwed up before roll over that grain is sitting out in the snow rotting on the ground for lack of cars. It would seem that this would have some consequences re JIT, but maybe the trucks have already picked up the slack. But it will definitly effect power plants if it keeps on this way. An interesting thing to watch, in my opinion.

I've seen railroad programming - hand-me-down 360 code, maintained by clueless newbies who really want to be doing Windows GUI stuff. Some of these folks are doomed.

My 50k casualty estimate is predicated on railroad failure, leading to food-supply disruption and failure to deliver coal to power plants. Now that the grid stayed up (thank you, thank you, thank you) the railroads are probably our greatest vulnerability. Except maybe for all out other vulnerabilities.

Hang on to those preps, people. Day 3.

Have to say only that I was wondering the same thing over the weekend and into today. We live in earshot of tracks, and my mom has a lumberyard with railroad loading docks only 100 yds from her house. Have been over there 2-3 times since New Years and ..... was wondering to myself if it wasn;t just very very quiet ......

Just a note, there was a load of coal in the Brunswick, MD yard, destined either for Darnesville PP, or one of the other nearby power stations on Thurdsday of last week. Must have been over fifty cars long full of coal. Some larger power facilities take upwards of 200 cars worth of coal a day. I suspect some coal has been prepositioned, but the coal will have to start moving pretty soon.

At home over the weekend I noticed hardly any freight train activity which is unusual in my area. However after returning to work today, I counted 12 freight trains passing by my window close to the tracks. As I type this at home now I can hear a train passing by so would judge traffic to be back to normal. I hope all the railroad crossing gates are truly compliant! I will surely stop and look before crossing.
