Huge "Fireball" seen from San Diego to Lake Elsinore to LA...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi. There was a comment from someone farther down the list, but I couldn't find it. Sorry for the repeat posting.

There was a fireball spotted earlier this evening. KTLA (Los Angeles t.v. station) reported that yes, something was seen, but they had no idea yet what it was. KTLA also stated that there had been calls to the FAA, but they said no plane was in trouble. The local pd's and fire depts. also have nothing to report yet.

Lots of people saw it, but no-one knows what it is.

I'll post if there's anything else KTLA reports.

KTLA reported that Griffith Park Observatory states it was a meteor.

So where did it hit? Does anyone know?

-- CD (cdokeefe@firstva.com), January 03, 2000.

hmmm

I wonder why the power is going off everywhere, las vegas, LA, other parts of So. Cal.

-- cin (cinlooo@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

I for one am *grateful* that we're only faced with flaming rocks falling from the sky.

:)

Just what we need - a 'drunkem meteor' hitting a power pole...:)

-- John Whitley (jwhitley@inforamp.net), January 03, 2000.

Griffith Observatory says - maybe it was a meteor shower. No one is concerned.

John W... ROFL!

-- (RUOK@yesiam.com), January 03, 2000.

Lots of chemical plants down in that area. Maybe a whole cloud of fumes is leaking out and when somebody lit a cigarette... VAAVOOMPH!!

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), January 03, 2000.

So the part about Griffith O. was a joke, right? No meteor. What did the bubblehead anchor people out there say it was?

-- CD (cdokeefe@firstva.com), January 03, 2000.

"I wonder why the power is going off everywhere, las vegas, LA, other parts of So. Cal."

Maybe because they are getting ready to go back to work tomorrow, so they are trying to take the systems back off of manual workarounds?

Meteors don't hit the ground :-)

Meteorites do. Not every Meteor produces a meteorite. In fact, only a microscopic percentage do. Most disintegrate or blow up miles above the surface, and some simply skip off the atmosphere out into space.

Certainly sounds like a fireball meteor...quite an impressive sight, and more common than you think. Most aren't associated with a specific known shower, but the only one I've ever seen was with the Leonids last year. Lit up the sky like daylight, the smoke trail was visible for 8 minutes.

I saw a fireball meteor last month, and I was directly in the ungodly and star suppressing presence that is Pittsburgh's ambient light aura. I could only imagine what it would like in a darker environment-a.k.a off the coast.

Well, SOMEBODY tell me. I'm more clueless (less clueful?) than Cory.

-- =DSA. (dsangal@attglobal.net), January 03, 2000.

I believe Dog refers to my gender. It's not nearly as feminine as my father would prefer. I suppose I have a bit too much in common with the large family of women he hails from who were all tough as nails, and tended to give the impression that they were similar to two miles of bad road.

What a great group of gals. They pioneered Wyoming, tended ranches and took no prisoners. True Americans and a nearly dead breed.

-sigh-

Will continue:

Oh, I see. Sorry, I didn't know . . . I didn't consistently spend enough time here prior to rollover to learn much about the participants. I'll try to watch my gender bias in the future.

I believe that the protocol of the forum requires me, at this point, to ask if you like to mudwrestle. However, my wife wouldn't appreciate that much, so instead I'll just say -- really thought your post was a hoot!

=DSA,

The mudwrestling inquiry is not required, but a sense of humour here helps a great deal. :-)

Welcome!

Hey Will Continue;

You live in Wyoming, or just from there?

-- hiding in plain (sight@edge of.nowhere), January 03, 2000.

But Will - it's more to take prisoners....particularly in the wilds of Wyoming in the winter! ( You need everybody you can get in times like that, the loneliness of the pioneers in isolated homes in the 1880's, 1890's, ... 1990's is well known.) 8<) ......

Saw a tremendous flaming meteor over North GA a few days before the Leonid shower in Nov, but none during the shower itself. They are very dramatic - certainly if one were over So. CA it's attract comment and speculation.

Fifth generation Wyoming stock. We moved to Kansas about 3 years ago. Where are you located? It is an awesome State, and the low population is a big plus!

I have enjoyed your posts, hiding. Thanks for contributing!

Why - Wyoming - where else? :-)

I run a housing complex, as well as serving as an ordained minister, on the Wind River Rez.

Thank you - I enjoy being part of this TB2000 family, and am grateful for the opportunity to share.

-- (larrym@m-y.net), January 03, 2000.

Larry, it was widely confirmed that these were short-range scuds fired into Grozny by the Russian army. We have some sort of agreement with Russia regarding this type of incident being a non-issue.
