JAMAICA: Banks to remain closed on Monday as Y2K precaution

KINGSTON, Jamaica, (AP) - Jamaica's banks will remain closed to customers on Monday as a precaution against Y2K computer failures even though the rest of the country has reported no problems.

The government has asked banks to check that all of their computers are working before reopening on Tuesday, a statement from the Finance Ministry said Sunday.

The extra day will also give bankers time to finish month-end and year-end reports and check their connections with other banks and electronic networks.

Experts fear the Y2K glitch, which causes computers to mistake the year 2000 for 1900, may cause malfunctions when businesses reopen on Monday.
