GMT clock -- comments please

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Following is a quote from Shakey on another thread. First, I really want to know if this is a joke? If it's not, please share sincere comments and spare the flames.

Why were there not a rash of calamities on the roll over? Try this thought out in your mind. Just about every trick that could be conceived of to buy time, was put into action by the people running the power generation systems.. From manual over rides, to out and out right lying to the PLCs and other digital systems. To one that even I never thought of...Causing the GMT atomic clock to run backward! No year 2000 signals went out from that clock over the satellites..LOL.

I use the atomic clock at Lawrence Livermore National Labs to maintain the time on my network. For laymen, this is done using a process that checks with LLNL constantly to keep the local time up to date. I have seen absolutly NO indication that LLNL did anything to 'doctor' that clock.

I think that the statement is pure vapor.

Someone kept posting on 1-1-00 after the rollover that the GMT clock was showing 12-31-99 25:00:00 and so on....

Is this possible? and what effect would this have on systems worldwide?

It was a web page error. The clock was fine.

There are lots of web pages with real interesting errors, take a look at:

For a discussion of a web page that is having a "bad year" day.

Helium....

My Son's puter showed on Jan. Ist, a date of 2096. No one knows where this date can be explained. He reset to 2000 and its seems to be kosher.
