OT: earthquakes or y2k

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Don't know if this is *off topic* or a y2k glitch. at www.geophys.washington.edu/us.epi.gif they show earthquake map of U.S. This shows activity in past 2 weeks. The area of central U.S. only indicated a few quakes a few days ago. Now it looks like the map was hit with a shot gun blast!! Is this just a y2k data problem or mega activity?

Hey, bob:

Ain't mega activity -- I live in one of the regions "hit by the shotgun blast", and we haven't been shaken at all in the past two weeks.

Bob:

Live a bit north of Anita but haven't felt anything here. Then we seldom feel the quakes that they report.

Best wishes,,,

Anita and Z- I live in Louisville,Ky. and therefore am near to the New Madid fault (Mo.) and watch the activity once or twice a week. A few days ago there was 1 at New Madrid and about 3 at the Tenn. , Georgia border. Now look! These are magnitude 2 or larger. You wont feel anything til it gets to 5 or larger. Even at 5 you need to be in a 3 story or higher building. This is do to the type of rock strata we have around here. This volume of activity on the map is real strange...unless the geological data is having problems looking BACKWARDS 2 weeks.

Bob, I live in earthquake country (near Cal/Nev border) and watch these sites all the time. There are always earthquakes, see: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/index.html it shows 305 quakes in Calif in the last week. This is normal. Mostly small ones with some 4.0's mixed in. Another reason why I feel good about my preps, we never know when (not if) the dreaded big one will hit

Right Bob:

I spent the first half of my life in earthquake country [the west]. Had ones that you could feel on a regular basis. The ones that normally occur in Missouri are too small to notice. I hope that it stays that way!!!

Best wishes,,,

Bill- yes I know California on a typical day has many, many tremors. We don't around here. You look for *unusual* activity. I check Californias' map every week too. (got relatives there in LA) I am more inclined to think it's y2k data problem than actual activity around here, but I will sure keep an eye on it.

Oopsie, a good EQ site hit by the Y2K bug:

Current Seismic Events

Their dates are off, hence no listings ...

IRIS Seismic Monitor

Generated on 1/2/100 at 18:31:08 GMT.

We look at it a couple times per day and hope they fix it Monday ...

There are many, many impercetible tremors almost everywhere everyday - - nothing new
