COMMUNITY CELEBRATION 1999

Facilitators: Kevin Dowty, Jerry Hilfer, Harmony Lennox, Dawn Schindeldecker, Karen Swenson, and Mary Beth Tuohy.

Objective: To provide an evening of family fun in a safe and caring environment.

Key Roles: As facilitators we organized the format regarding games, activities, food, volunteers, schedules, location, and advertising. The following games and activities were provided:

* Pocket Lady -- A student wearing a dress containing pockets filled with prizes. Pocket lady has a student partner who helps distribute prizes and candy.

* Fish Pond -- A fishing rod with an attached clothes pin is cast over a backdrop where prizes are hooked.

* Bean Bag Toss -- A clown board where bean bags are tossed through the clowns mouth for a prize.

* Turtle Bowl -- A type of bowling game where each student receives an appropriate prize depending on the number of pins knocked down.

* Sponge Ball Shoot -- A ping pong ball is shot off the top of pop bottle by a nerf arrow.

* Dumm Dumm Tree -- A foam tree of dumm dumm suckers are removed for prizes.

* Ring the Pop -- Plastic hoops are thrown over bottles of pop in order to win the pop.

* Bingo -- Bingo played for cash prizes. This game is open to both adults and students.

* Face Painting -- Pictures are painted on childrens faces with makeup.

* Duck Pond -- A duck is chosen from water trough and appropriate prizes are given to the number on the bottom of the duck.

* Bean Bag Tic Tac Toe -- Bean bags are tossed at a tic tac toe board. When tic tac toe is achieved a prize is awarded.

* White Elephant -- Sixth grade students are asked to bring in something from home that is in good shape, but no longer needed by their family. These items are then wrapped in newspaper and sold for a quarter.

* Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin -- A blindfolded child tries to pin a paper nose on a paper pumpkin attached to the wall.

* Can It -- Small plastic chips are tossed into cans attached to a large board.

* Helium Balloons -- Balloons are sold for a quarter. In the past weve used latex balloons for this activity and for a dart game. This year latex was not allowed in the school because of a parents allergy to latex.

* Bake Sale -- Parents and relatives of sixth grade students were asked to donate baked goods and to work at the bake sale during the carnival.

The following refreshments were sold: sloppy joes including pickles and chips, popcorn, snow cones, pop, cotton candy.,P> Overview: During the first week of October the facilitators met to organize the celebration. At that time we divided the list of games and activities among us. Each facilitator was in charge of making poster, advertising the celebration as well as making posters for each activity and game. Each faciltators classroom made invitations and delivered them to the K-2 students at Holler Elementary School. We then made a schedule. Each game required two student volunteers assigned to work 45 minute time slots. These volunteers were students from our classrooms.

The afternoon of October 28th was spent setting up the gymnasium and cafeteria at Falls Elementary School. Preparation included filling up helium balloons, decorating the tables for the bake sale, and putting up posters for game identification. The Community Celebration was help from 5 - 7 p.m. that evening. Volunteers arrived at 4:00 to sell tickets, price bake goods, prepare sloppy joes, and make popcorn.

A pre-school game room was added to this years celebration at the request of parents of toddlers. Only children under six years old were admitted to this room. Activities included:

* Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin -- A blindfolded child tries to pin a paper nose on a paper pumpkin attached to the wall.

* Make a ghost -- Children were given the opportunity to design their own ghost.

* Juice Lid Toss -- Juice lids were tossed into the mouth of a cardboard pumpkin.

* Blow the Ghost -- Kleenex ghosts were moved along the floor by blowing through a straw.

* Bean Bag Clown Toss -- Bean bags are tossed through a cardboard clowns mouth for prizes.

Once again this years celebration was very successful. The exact proceeds from the celebration are unknown to us at this time, but we anticipate them to be about the same as last year which was $2000. This money will be used to help finance the sixth grade trip to St. Paul at the end of May.

Community members and parents were very pleased with our Community Celebration. We, as facilitators, felt a great sense of pride in accomplishing our objective.
