Are the trains running?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A number of folks have posted on another BBS that they live near RR tracks with typically heavy traffic and they've all noticed that there has been virtually no train traffic since the rollover.

Has anyone else noticed this lack of train activity in their area?

Hi, Nick -- Our trains are running here, although not nearly as many as normal. We've had 2 so far this a.m.

Here is a site for Union Pacific with some Y2K updates, for what it is worth. http://www.uprr.com/uprr/pr/y2kupdate/ (Sorry, I haven't figured out how to make a link yet.)

God bless!

I live 3 miles from the Conway PA. railway yards north of Pittsburgh. Coal trains moving OK,as are others.Have neighbors that work there and they say minimal problems,no major hang ups. Also noticed barge traffic moving OK on rivers, moving coal and fuel.Several power plants unloading coal barges as normal, as are fuel depots.

Amtrack goes thru our town lately about every ten minutes one way or the other. Come to think of it I haven't heard a train for maybe a day or so.

As I recall, the greatest problem the railroads were expected to face was rearrangement of individual cars at the major distribution yards. Coal and grains are supposed to be individual cargos, so less susceptible to hangups.

Nick....

I spent 38 years on the Railroad. It is not unusual for trains to stop running over the holidays. Especially THIS holiday. Relax and enjoy this beautiful weather.

I've been astonished how smooth the rollover went. Astonished, but delighted! The past year has been a real learning experience. I will cherish the debates on this forum forever. My eyes have been opened to the opinions of others having far greater insite than I regarding the infrastructure that governs our way of life.

Did I prepare? you bet I did. Here again, I have no regrets. I'm prepared to remain so for it offers a simpler, hassle free lifestyle, and great sense of security for my family.

We should ever remain alert, have our lamps full of oil, and be glad to turn the other cheek. Our neighbor may not be as gracious.....
