Hate To Burst Anyone's Bubble But...........

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Ladies and Gents, I don't wish to disillusion anyone (especially those patting themselves on the back with an 'I told you so') but it may be prudent to wait and keep an eye on this before jumping to conclusions. There are enough indicators out there to advise caution. Yes, we're being told things went without incident but anyone with their ears and eyes open has to realize that it did not and that the media is either outright lying or downplaying events. My husband near fell off his chair when he heard a CNN reporter talk about three scud missiles being launched but that they didn't get far enough to 'count'! How many things can be explained away as coincidence before we take notice? Panic is always silly but so is burying your head in the sand. Personnally I'm just watching awhile longer before drawing any conclusions.

Details about the SCUDs?

-- james hyde (hydesci@gte.net), January 01, 2000.

That's just what I mean. No details were given. A reporter from CNN was covering from Norad and he started talking about how three scuds had been launched but that the US military and Russian military had an agreement not to count anything under a certain distance. He never gave any more details............nor did I see him again. I'm sure many others saw this too and were just as surprised and bewildered as we were.

It was speculated on broadcast media that Russia sent Scuds into Chechneya. All three were within 500 mile radius. http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002AHw

I've been AMAZED that rollover went thru without any major glitches. But, whatever actually did happen with these Scud missles, happened many, many hours ago and didn't cause a problem ... unless you were where those Scud missles hit.

You're right. Watch awhile longer before drawing any conclusions. That's what I'm doing.

Scud Politics Russia may have launched the Scuds into Chechnya to blow people up and break things, but glommed onto Y2K as a way to CYA. In case they killed too many people or broke too many things, they could say, "Y2K did it!"

Now here we go again with the rumor mills! Haven't we learned anything yet about what rumors can do? The 3 scud missiles were under the 500 mile radius which under the agreement between the Russians and Americans did not require the Americans to report it to the Russians. And it was thought that the missiles probably took place where Russia is fighting. That's what the military explanation was last night on TV when the subject first came up. Our military could not talk further about it because of the agreement with the Russians. So .... let's deal with facts and enough of this crazy rumor mill speculation folks. PLEEEEESE .... we're not out of the Y2K woods yet, but we have made one huge giant leap in that direction ... so, let's just be very very thankful that at rollover ... the world everywhere still had power, phones, heat, water, sewers ... and inorder to get there an awful lot of people have been working their tails off for the past 5 years to make sure we had as smooth a rollover as possible. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope that all will continue to go relatively smoothly.

Details were given. They were aimed at Chechnya, on purpose, in their continueing war against them.

Are you going to continue looking for any little thing you can turn into a Y2K failure?

Suggestion; spend one day looking at everything you see, read and hear as if it were just regular day to day occurances and not related to Y2K and you might just have a day with peace of mind.

Please don't throw stones! If I heard about three scuds being launched on ANY day, with an agreement that they didn't count under a certain range, I'd be asking these same questions. I only stated what the reporter had said - he was talking about Y2K glitches and didn't explain anything further. That news item was NOT repeated as so many were ad nauseum so it did leave some of us scratching our heads and wondering why. I am listening carefully to all of you and only asking questions about things I have seen with my own eyes, or heard with my own ears.........like CNN's disappearing yellow alert light in NZ just after rollover. I'm not an alarmist. I'm not jumping on anything to prove my point because I don't have a point - I'm watching and questioning things that don't make sense or that are outright lies I've heard first hand. Frankly, I'm even more concerned about that than Y2K failures - those I know we'll survive!

I am concerned about any country launching missles anywhere -- Y2K, US/Russia agreement or no. NewsMax posted articles just before Christmas about Russia's plans to use nuclear devices against Chechnya and its warnings to the US against getting involved.

Furthermore, how is it a rumor when many folks who has reported on this credited CNN? Also, it is CNN's job to report all the facts and circumstances involved if they know it. By downplaying the incident, they leave people asking questions and speculating. That's why I always question the intent and purpose of what the mainstream media reports.
