DATE TRUNCATION PROBLEMS

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just thinking about dates being truncated when the date seems to be 19100. If you have a mmddyy day format, there are going to be serious problems. Thats why some systems have been showing dates like 1910 (the extra 0 in 100 has been clipped.)

Yes, the data corruption begins.

Wonder if you could get mail if it was originally

JOHNDOE1231stSTANYTOWNID8888812/10/99

JOHN DOE 123 lst ST ANYTOWN ID 88888 12/10/1999

Then it became OHNDOE1231stSTANYTOWNID8888801/10/100

OHND OE1 231 stS SA NTTOWNI D8 88880 1/10/19100

It could prove interesting to such "non-mission-critical" systems such as billing or perhaps payroll. And to think that the USPS is going to a much more automated letter directing system requiring accurate addresses written legibly or else automatic return to sender by the end of January. I hope I'm wrong, but it could still happe
