OK, so Yourdon was RIGHT!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

After seeing the pictures of the mess in Times Square this morning, I guess it does resemble Beirut. In a way.

And watching the rollover hour after hour yesterday, the fireworks in all those cities did resemble bombings. After a fashion.

Somehow, though, my guess is that wasn't what he meant.

So one more date, THE date, has come and gone. I'm sure the explanations are in the works. But once again, we see the utter failure of the direside to extrapolate from potential Y2k errors to their overall impacts.

Ed Yourdon's "most likely scenario" proved to be utter nonsense. "Mr CEO" must truly be elational.

Oh, the groundwork was laid long ago to extend the "doomer" timeline indefinitely. I see they're at work already, with the "it's just the beginning chant". Well, good luck, folks. Because it's NOT the beginning. We've been dealing with potential Y2k errors for some time. We've been dealing with IT system failures for the past year at an extremely high rate.

The usual retort to this, by people such as the illustrious Ms Squire, is that "yes, but we have electricity, and the phones work, and people can drive to work".

Well, people, we have electricity, the phones do work, and I can still drive to work.

No, not all Y2k problems have been encountered. Yes, things will break. And yes, we'll deal with them, just as we always have.

I won't be sticking around much longer; maybe till the end of January. I've really cut back on this stuff. Why? For the same reason many here have cited. I don't hang around flat-earth boards, or alien abduction sites, debunking their beliefs.

I suppose the "True Believers" will be around here for quite awhile. Again, good luck. I imagine quite a few had their eyes opened yesterday, but there should still be a core to continue with.

Y2k is here, folks. Time to deal with reality.

"Reality feels pretty good to me!"

Let's see how you feel once the novelty wears off.

Betty, hun ? It's nice that you would love to save the rest of us, but maybe instead you could have your concience better satisfied if you would find yourself a charity (Save the Whales ?) to donate to. Thanks for trying to redeem the poor, lost Y2K'ers but, NO THANKS. It isn't over until everything ties in ON A NORMAL BUSINESS COURSE. 1 to 3 weeks. Bye, bye.

Ah, promises, promises. Could you move up the date from 01/31/100 to 01/03/100?

No scenario can be ruled out this early in the game...I'm still prepping. Anybody selling "unneeded" items?

Did any of you bother to read Yourdon's post this morning? The only thing I note that is 'real' here is your insistance on assigning blame and assessing who's right and who's wrong. The truth is what you decide the truth is.

Yes, Mello1, I read Yourdon's post.

Does it surprise you that he is still attempting to rationalize? It certainly doesn't surprise me. He has done it all along.

Though it shouldn't, what does surprise me is that, even now, people on this board continue to ask for "assessments" from him, and others such as Paula Gordon and R.C. "Assessments" from people who, at every turn, have shown an almost uncanny ability to be completely wrong in their ability to measure and assess the potential impacts of Y2k.

My disgust reached new heights two days ago. I was at Ukrop's (a grocery store here in Richmond), and saw a woman with her son, appeared to be about 4 or 5. I overheard her telling her son that they had to buy this food, because "tomorrow night the lights are all going off and we won't be able to eat".

Now, I don't know where she received her information. But this is the result of the type of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, that Ed Yourdon has been instrumental in generating and perpetuating.

There will always be the Gary North's of this world. But Ed Yourdon used his professional expertise, and even position of leadership, to spawn this BS. While at the same time, launching multiple ventures to "Cash in on the Y2k Craze".

So by all means, accept his rationalizations, and those of the others here who will continue to perpetuate the FUD. I'll pass, all the same.

No, the truth is not what you decide the truth is. The truth is whatever the truth is. At this point, much of the truth remains to be discovered. Which I think is what you said, probably. :)
