I am amazed at the posts here

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am just floored by the posts here.

Is it possible that after all this time and all this talk that nobody here really studied Y2K or its implications?

Did you people really expect a boom at midnight?

You will know the results of Y2K in about 6 months, maybe. Meanwhile get on with your lives people.

Quiz question:

How long did it take for the 'great crash of '29' to occur?

Answers

YEARS!

Hi Art,

Dunno how long the crash of '29 took, but I know it definitely wasn't overnight.

We need to be patient here; you're right - this is not a one-moment event. Date related calculations involve date RANGES ... it will be interesting to see what little "fires" pop up in business systems in the coming weeks as they start making calculations based on "today" and "previous date".

Patience everybody. Remain cautious. Hope for the best, but remain alert.

Good one Art,

Regarding your question about "the great crash of 29" I would like to add another question. How many people saw it coming, pulled out, put their money back in too soon and still lost it all?

-- BiGG (supersite@acronet.net), January 01, 2000.

How many ways can you say "just in time" or "immediacy is the only accepted mode of operating". I am astounded by the immaturity and the whinning that has gone on here. This responce is more appropriate to infants who are unable to rationalize therefor unable to delay satisfaction. My choice is to either stay here searching some intelligent exhange or try to find info elsewhere.

Thanks, Art.

More than possible, I'm afraid.

What's Wrong with the Way the World Thinks about Y2K

-- Lane Core Jr. (elcore@sgi.net), January 01, 2000.

Mr. Core,

In Dale Ways Essay he speaks of the Subliminal message being projected by the Media and the 'end game' message.

Subliminal would seek to answer my question as to why all the celebratory attitude of pollies and the downcast shamed response of said doomers. All anyone has to do is go back and read the info. Death by a thousand cuts. etc. Cant people read???

Subliminal programming is at work.

Art,

Relax. It's a bubble of relief because the power stayed on, phones stayed up and banks are still working. Whatever happens, we can deal with it using the full tools of civilization. Even a second Great Depression will not mean the "end of the world." All the nonsense about defending homes from raiding bands of marauders...

over.

Wait a cotton pickin' minute here. Think back several years. The big insight then was that things would go haywire precisely at midnite. They did not and most of us give thanks for this (not everyone tho, right?). IMHO, originally there was the potential for a humongus discontinuity at midnite. It was something for prudent people to prepare for. It did not happen, not because it was a meme; it did not happen because huge bucks and huge human efforts at remediation were successful. I thank those folks who toiled long hours on remediating code abd systems. For legal reasons, it was never possible to acknowledge these efforts as they happened. Seems like a good book or movie could now be made that would dramatize the remediation and how close we came to a collapse. Thanks to those who worked anonymously worked overtime for a year to insure a successful rollover.

Think back several years. The big insight then was that things would go haywire precisely at midnite. True statement. But, we all have had several years to become more educated about the subject of Y2K. I think most of the "Oldtimers here have come to the conclusion that approximately 5% of the failures would occour at midnight. A percentage of Y2K problems manifested prior to the rollover and the balance would take place between January 3, 2000 and the middle of March.

I refuse to eat crow for breakfast this morning, but, will step up to the plate and eat my fair share in March if I have to.

-- Uncle Bob (UNCLB0B@AOL.COM), January 01, 2000.

As ABC News wrapped up its coverage this morning, the comment was made that (paraphrasng" "...we will not know the true extent of any Y2K failures for quite some time." The relief was certainly there, but tempered with a bit of caution.

I was somewhat amused when Lesley Visser opened the coverage of the Rose Parade by quoting what she called "an ancient Chinese proverb": May you live in interesting times. She seemed to think that it was quite beneficent, whereas I've always heard it used as a kind of curse. Guess it all depends on one's worldview...

-- DeeEmBee (macbeth1@pacbell.net), January 01, 2000.

No, it was meant as a curse.

They also have a proverb about chaos... :o)

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), January 01, 2000.

dciinc; You mean that as a joke right? If you don't why don't you capture some evidence for these "subliminals" and post it here. This sort of noise is the part of this thing that has been so darned distracting. One can't read thru the fear mongering to find the meat without being "subliminally programmed by idiots". Everything you read has an influence on your thinking.

-- Michael Erskine (Osiris@urbanna.net), January 01, 2000.

Please...................these so called "doomers" posting about being "idiots and ashamed" are TROLLS. No one that truly understands the intricate, global, interconnectedness of the 2000 bug would say its over because we made the roll without Catastrophic Problems. Half of the World is on Holdiay until Jan. 03, 2000.

No big KaBoombs, THANK Goodness but most of us who shared in analyzing the issue of Y2k understand the very basic fact that we are no where near out of the woods on this.

I remember reading an essay by a doomer about being prepared to be wrong about Y2k. It turns out that was excellent advice!

Vindicated Regards,
Andy Ray
