Now what

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Yes, I understand that that it's monday now that will determine the worlds condition. (first it was 00:00, then Greenwich time) But it doesn't stop the fact that my living room looks like a fuc**ing grocery store! (and my wife needs loving;) I use to be a gentle man, I have a wife and kids and consider myself a peacefull person. NOW, I find myself hopeing for a world disaster. Even if this is a small-event, it has changed me (for now anyway)

It has me too. I woke up this morning & feel this eery let down. Is that nuts. It'l like, what do I do now? I've spent so much energy getting ready. There's so many mixed messages...I keep waiting to see if disaster will strike.

Give it all to charity, numbskulls...

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), January 01, 2000.

Yeah, blame others for your failings. Face it you never gave anyreal thought to the Y2K question. You did all your prepsout of fear. You are just another head of cattle. You never had your own set of beliefs about Y2K. You just ran with the herd. I have no regrets. I prepped . The difference between you and I is, I knew why and believed in why I was prepping. You and that whole herd of GI's that are whining about being laughed at and neglecting your families etc. are absolutely pathetic.

-- Lenny (chmielecki@worldnet.att.net), January 01, 2000.

That's a little harsh Lenny, but I know what you mean. Unless you really did something stupid like buy a $10,000 generator, you shouldn't doubt your actions. I just found out when I went to the store yesterday that the cans of coffee I bought for $3.89 are now about $9.00, the rice I bought for $4.99 is $7.49, and lots of other things like that. It was a good investment, and something I will still use. No regrets here. It never hurts to be prepared.

--who me?

Well it could be worse, we ate our family dog during a 'Y2K Drill' last week and boy are the kids pissed.

But I do know how you feel. I was totally prepared for TEOTWAWKI but not for this. It's a strange feeling.

Well go love your wife, and start eating the groceries, looks like a win-win proposition to me. And make a vow that you won't buy any groceries until the last bean has been consumed. I won't have to buy TP or paper towels for at least 2 years. I won't have many dishes to wash because I'm going to use up all my paper plates. I won't have to purchase shampoo or toothpaste for a couple of years. I'll have plenty of water for my garden come spring and summer. I'm already planning camping trips so my propane cylinders will come in handy. I'll light all my oil lamps and candles every night until summer. In February, I'll start my veggies for spring planting. I won't have to purchase underwear or shoes for a couple of years. Looks like I'll have lot's of extra cash to reinvest in the stock market. WalMart is really going to miss me.

Hey there, harsh words,

I never said I was sorry or whinning. First of all I live in France and 75% belived that it would be a non- event. I am the minority and one of the few here. I also belive that after numerous warnings, not reacting when you have a family is plain ignorance. About this 2 month stock I have....It will be subtracted from march's grocery list :) (you never know about feb 29 ;)

-- who me? (negative@neg.com), January 01, 2000.

Put a very needed item on your "BUY LIST". HISTORY BOOKS. After you buy them, open and read them. Then, THINK! What does our country have in common with every other nation/"empire" that sailed the great sewage pipes of history????? ANSWER: EVERYTHING!

You also may want to appreciate how many folks prayed for our country and for global stability. If there is anyone who prepped and then prayed for God's Mercy and Grace, surely you can only be thanking God at this point for alittle space to rest before renewing your preps. We are very far from out of the woods.

Considering the loss of life that we would be experiencing now, had the "grid collapsed", shame on anyone who "feels embarrassed that they look foolish!" I have and am remaining prepped; I am so eternally grateful to God for moderate weather and an uneventful rollover. There are many 70+ year old folks who can enjoy ONE MORE DAY. For this I am very, very HAPPY. Yet, I remain prepped and ready to be...

Two months of groceries? Is that all? Wow! You got off cheap! If your hoping for a world disaster, you need more groceries.

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), January 01, 2000.

Yes harsh words - because IT AIN'T OVER YET!

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), January 01, 2000.

(He Who) Rolls With Punches......AMEN!

and for the rest...I suggested somewhere here in the past...learn from what you now know. Don't stop applying those things in your life. Keep your stocks/preps..renew them as you go. Teach your kids and freinds. Then-if something ever does go bad- you are ready.

Think about those people in Europe right now with the Winter storms that blew thru- you think any that survived that were prepared are in better shape than those not prepared? MidWest U.S. lots of tornados and ice storms- think the 'Doomers' will be in better shape or the 'Pollies' in the same situation when a major storm goes thru. Same with those in a place such as Florida with a major hurricane.

Think I'll continue to be prepped and keep prepped. Like the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared.

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), January 01, 2000.

I'll second bardou and satanta. If an ice storm hits a region, power can be out for weeks. I had that pleasure a couple of years ago and swore never again. So what if your living room looks like a grocery store? Go to Office Max and buy a bunch of those folding file boxes, pack your stuff in them, and lable them up. For example, office supplies=coffee, filters, powdered creamers. Tax Records = toilet paper, sanitary supplies. Vacation maps = candy bars, road munchies. Old Books = survival manuals and dutch oven recipes. Electric bills = propane lamps and cylinders, and the 10,000 ohio blue tips you've got. Phone bills = 2 way radios, scanners, shortwave radio guides. Client Files = Bulk foods. Christmas Ornaments = extra gloves, hats, mittens. Tell friends you've set up a massive home office and they'll not know the difference.

Consider the positive side to this. A well stocked pantry offers a sense of security. I personally like not running out of stuff. If a storm knocks out power for a while, no big deal. Folks in our town were nearly losing their minds by the 4th day w/o power. There is the possibility that this thing has just begun. Yardeni said there was a 70% chance of a recession due to failures; this guy is the best of the best. Sit back, relax today and enjoy a few football games.

First.............Bob, eating your dog was one of the funniest posts I've seen, my eyes are still running.

Now on the more serious side.......And since most of the pollies are indeed in a drunken stuper...and I can escape before getting flamed to bad, I'll re-post a prediction of what I still consider to be a reasonable outcome. I think this was posted by P.M.D. a couple days back. The big wild-card in this scenario was the embedded outcome which I agree with many posting this morning that we haven't seen this work itself out yet. With that said here was the post. My comments in ( )

Week 1 Dec 31st-Jan 8th primary embedded failures (some water/sewer, chemical plants, manufacturing) - Unknown level of impact...could be a 1 (unlikely but possible) or a 7-10 (unlikely but possible) figure a general 2-3 in most areas but a 10 in others.

(Certainly no apparent show stoppers, don't hear of anybody dropping from mis chlorinated water, Next 24 hrs should tell a lot about embedded problems.... remember some of the more dire predictions involve oil. So if the embedded issue plays out without major problems things start to look better. In my estimation the lack of any reposts of embedded problems at this point is suspect. So what does the level of impact show at this point 09:30 EST?.... <1, BUT! this hand is not yet fully played.)

Week 2-14 The unraveling of the economy-JIT failures, processing, accounting glitches. Fuel goes through the roof... rationing is probable. Stock market contracts, puffs then implodes for 2 qtrs. minimum. Longer if fail scenarios in production facilities remain troubled. This will be a 5-9 on the scale. Oil and chemical plants hold the key here. 40% of small businesses have done nothing for y2k. 10% of these will fail outright within 6-12 weeks. 7-26 million will be added to the unemployment rolls by June 2000. Govt. steps in but can't stem the tide. National emergency declared in most states by mid Feb.

(Again if the embedded issue goes away, the scale lowers by a couple of notches. The financial sector, small business and the market have not even seen Y2K yet. This will play itself out over the next few weeks and months, but thing still do not look good in my estimation.)

Week 15-52 Slow then moderate recovery mixed with new fail scenarios keep anxiety very high. Level drops some to 4-7. Market starts back on recovery but will take yrs to recover fully.

(no comments at this point.... depends on the above).

P.M.D If you are still out there I'd like your input.
