greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

And auld lang syne!

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

2. And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!

And surely I'll be mine!

And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

Chorus:

3. We twa hae run about the braes

And pou'd the gowans fine;

But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,

Sin' auld lang syne.

Chorus:

4. We two hae paidled i' the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine;

But seas between us braid hae roar'd

Sin' auld lang syne.

Chorus:

5. And here's a hand, my trusty fere!

And gie's a hand o' thine!

And we'll tak' a right gude-willy waught,

For auld lang syne.

Chorus:

E that to me Git, please.

I guess we know why no one ever sings it... (I once partied with some Scots who actually knew the lyrics, that was pretty strange).

OK OG., I'll bite.

What's it mean? Did Bobby Burns write it? Sounds like some of his poetry. What's a lang, what's a syne? Something like a syne wave? Similar to a co-syne?

I have wondered this for about 50 years, and have despaired of ever understanding what the words to that song mean. Sometime you can send me the translation.

But, thanks for posting it anyway.

Happy New Year.

Believe it or not, I've read enough Robert Burns that I could translate that - and I love it!

Old Git, I've been looking for you all day. Happy New Year, old dear - I was afraid to say it before.
