Is anyone else as embarrassed as I am right now?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Well, I was all ready for y2k......got my generator, got my woodburning stove, got my stores of food, got my batteries, etc. Despite family and friends laughing at me and telling me I was crazy for preparing, I persevered and prepared anyway. Now I'm TOTALLY EMBARRASSED!!

Y2K is absolutely NOTHING!! Not even a hitch in the so-called "backward" countries like Russia. Why did we fall for this hype?? Why did we allow the people like Ed Yourdon to talk us into being prepared for this Y2K "bug" when it wasn't anything to get prepared about, to begin with?

I feel cheated, betrayed, misused, abused, deceived and everything else!! :( I could have done a LOT of "stuff" with all the money I spent on "preparations". What a joke! The joke's on me and those like me!! Thanks Ed Yourdon!!!

Hi polly troll! What a feeble attempt at humor.

-- Wondering What (it@is all about.com), December 31, 1999.

Oh, come off it. Yourdon nor anyone else held a gun to my head and made me decide what I would or wouldn't do.

Sorry, I am my own person and take full responsibility for my actions.

And, there is something very "fishy" about all these glowing reports, when even our own government (there's a reliable group) stated Italy was a basket case, but lo and behold, they made the rollover just fine.

Just keep in mind, you don't owe anyone anything for your decisions. We're not out of the woods yet.

-- Richard (Astral-Acres@webtv.net), December 31, 1999.

There is one of two things happening here, one of which must be a lie.

1. We are being lied to by the media and information sources. Maybe they want us to celebrate the turn and just be happy and deal with it later.

2. The computer people all saw a way to make some real good money and hyped this bitch for all it was worth.

Only time will tell.......

I feel the same as you right now, with my husband and (ex) friends all acting like I need to be committed to a mental institution

It was the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Institute for Standards and Technology, too.

Your name is a good one. Just because the world has not come to an end in the last 12 hours, does not mean we are not going to have some serious problems in the next few weeks and months. Are you one of those people who waffle back and forth from one position to another depending on how the winds blowing? Slap yourself in the face and get a grip! Y2k hasnt even arrived in the US. You are really gullible to believe the "talking heads", those goons who couldnt tell the truth if their life depended on it. Everything is NOT as wonderful as it seems. I agree, things DO look good but for crying out loud, Y2K hasnt even hit our shores yet!! Plus all business is home for the holidays. SELL IT THEN. Make the rest of us happy. Do it and don't look back. It was assumed there would be those who would be riding the fence and regardless of how it went, somebody would be disappointed.

In all honesty ? Nobody really cares if you are embarassed. NOBODY. Sell your stuff or throw it away. Quit whining and moaning about how stupid you look and at least pretend you have a nad to face a minor disappointment in life.

Nobody wants to hear the whining and crying anymore. Go call the suicide hotline or something and cease with the pity call on this forum. K ? In the meantime, I will not stand down because I, and many others, understand that this isn't over just because the clock rolled. It is far too complicated for that. Jeez. What a loooozer !

Dale way--

"Yet the almost universal fixation on calendar roll-over, fundamentally a clock-only issue, which the end game metaphor implicitly and therefore sublimimally and dangerously supports, has so skewed the dialog and the public consciousness that society has been forced to focus on the 5% of the Y2K crisis that is least dangerous and easiest to deal with and obscured from clear view the other 95% of the problem that has the potential to do great damage to the economic and social order.""

READ IT AGAIN!!! and again and again

Right know we are focused on the 5% that has been easiest to deal with, the other 95% is yet to come. Sorry to dissapoint your time schedule.

Not only gullible but naive....

This is not the end of the story. But what if it is? Did you never consider that things MIGHT turn out ok? Why did you convince yourself that there could be NO OTHER outcome besides a very bad one?

About six months ago, I started to really ask myself, what are you doing? Are you acting rationally? What are you basing your actions on?

The answer was after over a year of studying Y2K, I couldn't acurately predict what was going to happen. But, I decided, that is a very good reason to continue prepping. And along with that decision came the realization that:

1) Whatever happened, I wasn't going to be sorry about it, or beat myself up about it, if all my preps were all for naught.

2) I was no longer going to try and convince anyone else to prep, or tell them what I was doing.

Tonight, I feel good about my decision. If our current good luck continues, Y2K will be a BITR, or even less. And I will not second guess myself. Even tonight, I cannot say what will happen, so why should I feel bad about preparing for something that I had a lot less info about 6mos. or a year ago?

If things worsen, I have my preparations, and will be fine. And I will not act the way Y2KPro is acting tonight. I will act like an adult.

My suggestion to you is whatever happens, don't second guess yourself. Life will go on, we will survive. Life's too short to suffer fools.

~~~~~~~~~~~
I never considered that things MIGHT turn out o.k. because all the folks in-the-know said that it WOULDN'T be o.k.!! All the crap was drilled into our heads about the "bad outcome" and all the computer bigwigs made us feel totally insane if we DIDN'T prepare!! I didn't think that things would be bad at all, but I trusted those SUPPOSEDLY superior people in the field to know better than me. Guess I trusted the wrong people! I'm going to go with my own instincts from now on. Now, that's what I DID learn!!
-- Gullible (ifeeldumb@aol.com), December 31, 1999.
Wanna know what I'm gonna do when I get back home to NYC? Do some more prepping. What a good idea. Buy it now before inflation and shortages hit. And they will.
-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), December 31, 1999.
All we have so far is solid indication that most of the embedded systems fears were greatly exaggerated. IT problems have a longer (sometimes MUCH longer) gestation period, before we have a clear picture.
But I should point out that the wildly incorrect predictions of embedded problems were based on *exactly* the same sort of thought process as the IT predictions. And I notice the new "official truth" is that all preparations were as wise as they are useless, and we can all feel proud for having done the unnecessary.
Hey, it's not that insurance is a bad idea. I'm just amused that people seem so amazed (even betrayed) that they don't need it yet. It's never a bad idea, but seriously overinsuring is an inefficient use of resources. I look forward (gulp) to a very boring diet for the next year.
-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), December 31, 1999.
C'mon guys...give me a break. Do you believe for one second that this individual was one of the preppers? Puhlease! I will feel a whole lot better after the period of time that even ol' Kosky suggested in a couple weeks and even months.
I've said it up until now and continue to proclaim that having a pantry, etc. isn't just a one time need. It's something our grandparents did that really made sense. It's just a matter of time whether we have a blizzard or ice storm in our area again. Perhaps it doesn't snow where you live, but you have hurricanes. Where I live we can experience all three type storms. Earthquakes? How abouts a limb falling and causing your elec. to out for weeks at a time as it did in the northwest.
Embarrassed? I think not. This is simply a post saying neener ... neener...neener. Please have the courtesy to show some maturity. Who within these forums wouldn't be thrilled to see the elec. companies functioning well?
-- beej (beej@ppbbs.com), December 31, 1999.
Notice how we are getting these similar posts with someone admitting how stupid they were to believe Y2K was a serious problem. I suspect that the same person is posting this using different names. I doubt that the poster spent anything on preparations.
-- Dave (dannco@hotmail.com), December 31, 1999.
The people scoffed and made fun of Noah too. Yea, you know the Noah I'm talkin bout.
Who cares what anyone thinks. You'll never please everybody all of the time anyway. Think of what your alternative could have been. Just know that you prepared when you thought you should have, and didn't sit back and lazily ignore your instincts. Yea, you know the ones I'm talkin bout...the instincts for survival. (I am so weird) =0)
-- cin (cinlooo@aol.com), December 31, 1999.
I think something is a little fishy, too. Why would the programmers be the ones that are wrong? I'm not a programmer but I am a network administrator for 5 offices of a very large national company and we were told by corporate to shut off everything (I mean EVERYTHING) before we left the offices for the holiday. If other large companies are doing the same thing we may have to wait until the first workday and beyond to really know what may happen. Maybe, as some suspected this thing is not going to happen at exactly midnight.
-- san (aces@ellijay.com), December 31, 1999.
The only people who should feel embarrassed about any Y2K issue are those who have deliberately flamed & insulted anyone who doesn't or didn't hold the same beliefs. I am probably one of the more open Pollies around here, yet I still think that there are a lot of glitches still to be found. The difference though is that even though there will still be many failures to come, IMHO they will be survivable.
I see some people making comments which appear to aimed at shifting the blame for their beliefs elsewhere. eg But it wasn't just Ed Yourdon. It was the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Institute for Standards and Technology, too. That is not neccessary because even though the correct information was available, it was they each individual chose to interpret that information that led them to their own beliefs.
Taking the embeeded systems issue as an example, Flint, Factfinder, Engineer etc have all tried to show that while there is always a chance of these systems failing the failure mode is usually benign. Others like North, Milne, Hawk have believed that any failure is total and catastrophic. Both sides have been persuasive, but your actions have always been based on your own beliefs.
So in short, no need for embarrassment from anyone. Just as I will not feel embarrassed if the failures still to come are worse than I expect.
-- Malcolm Taylor (taylorm@es.co.nz), December 31, 1999.
Hey Laura-
The only person here that's insane is you.
You have every right to believe what you want about Y2K; I still think it's too early to tell, but you may verry well end up being right.
But here's a big FUCK YOU for disrupting this forum for the past weeks and months.
Geee, how many threads like this have we had so far? It isn't even 2000 yet where I am!
" Do you believe for one second that this individual was one of the preppers?"
~~~~~~~~~~

No, guess I'm not a "prepper"! Just a person with:

1. a portable generator in the garage, all gased up and waiting to go.

2. a $1600.00 woodburning stove sitting in the living room.

3. 25# of sugar, 25# of flour, 150 lbs. of wheat berries, 50# of powdered milk, and various other asundry crap sitting in the pantry (and in the basement and in the bedroom and in the closet....!!!!)

4. a wheat grinder in the cupboard.

5. wood, cut and split, coming out the yang-yang.

6. 4 months worth of medicines and prescriptions in the medicine cabinet (lots of $$$$$$$$$$)!!!!!!!!!!!

7. 2 tanks of propane for the gas grill/stove-top burner sitting on the back deck.

8. a quick-escape pack in the trunk of the car containing the spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, a couple sets of clothing, etc.

Oh, it's just too much effort to list anymore!!

Yeah, you're right. Guess I'm not a prepper!! :(

Guillible,

This day reminds me of Hurricane Season. I live in Florida and every year for six months we are put thru the drill of watching and preparing for great big storms called hurricanes which can damn well KILL you and if they don't do that then they will at least scare the HELL out of you. Just listen to the voice of someone who has been thru a hurricane, particularly a bad one.

Every year without fail, hurricanes look like they are heading for North Florida where I live and the question always becomes, will they turn north in time ? They always do but people still wisely prepare for the one that one day won't.

We don't call each other fools when they turn, we breath a sigh of relief and semi-party that we didn't get hit.

Gullible:

Aren't you using that fine wood stove to heat with? Why not? I paid about the same for one a few years back, and haven't run the central heating since. If you cut and split your own wood, you can save enough on heating bills for the wood stove to pay for itself in a half dozen years at most. And it's great heat.

And you can eat all that food too. You can even cook it on the wood stove (we do) and save even more. So what's the problem?

LMAO! Are you gullible? yes. Are you in debt? yes. This has been an experiment and you were a part of it. However, some people were VERY clever to make a buck off of it.
