Background 7 The Pacific NW DC Intertie was taken out of service at 20:53 PST, December 30, 1999 by physically loosened tower guy wires. The tower is on the ground. This appears to be a deliberate sabotage incident. There was no loss of customer load. Repair is under way; possible return December 31, 1999. Plans are to patrol the line. Under Review 7 The Catawba Nuclear Unit No. 2 (1,120 MW, Duke Power in South Carolina) tripped at 18:21 EST, December 30, 1999. The cause has yet to be definitively determined. Power supplies remain very adequate due to moderate loads and other available generating capacity.

Thanks, FactFinder.

Asia has rolled over without any widespread infrastructure problems, though CBS News just reported a problem in the monitoring system of a nuclear reactor outside Tokyo. Moscow just rolled over without reported incident.

With positive reports flooding in from ALL over the world about the infrastructure working without incident, i.e. electricity, water, communications transportation and banking, I would characterize our time spent in discussing this event as so much intellectual masturbation. Who did we help? What tangible result did we provide? We were left standing with egg, or otherwise, on our faces. I am as guilty as everyone else.

Mike,

I wouldn't exhale just yet. Alot of my worries are based on terrorism and viruses. Most will be in the States. Also, most of the 'experts' said that it probably wouldn't start getting fun right at the turnover, but the weeks and months to come. I hope that I have egg on my face though, because the alternatives never sounded that great..

FF,

Seems like somebody had to be at work EARLY huh? Thanks for the report, and good luck. Thanks for all your efforts here. I'm just getting ready to leave for work, and must hurry, gotta go by the ATM to get money for the toll bridge, buy some caffinated products for the boring hours ahead.

God bless all, and have a safe, enjoyable holiday.
