GAWD! Quit whining!!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

If there is ONE fact about Y2K that EVERYONE should agree with, it is that it may take WEEKS to sort out the effects -- or non-effects -- from the rollover. The fact that the power did not go out and nuclear explosions did not happen, time-zone by time-zone, from New Zealand to China, is quite encouraging, but THE JURY IS OUT as to whether Y2K was a "dud" or not. OBVIOUSLY. As in, if you have spent any time at all comprehending what this forum has been discussing for the past two years, THIS SHOULD BE VERY OBVIOUS.

KOS;

Very true, this is just the kick off to Y2K, but so far the news is good, I for one am a happy camper. May this rollover not even be a three day storm. Thank god for small favors, we don't get them every day.

Think of it this way, more days to watch mudwrestling!

KOS, It's not obvious to me..

I just got off a web page in Taiwan.. Everything looked alright. Do you realize how much equipment I just traversed to do this?

I don't care about rinky-dink application systems that fail in the next few weeks.. The dangerous part about Y2K is the embedds. I agree the jury is still out, but it looks like a dud to me.

Glad we made it. Reminds me of when I was a kid waiting for X-mass and I thought it would never come. KoS (and many others) is correct. Early successes MAY indicate the embedded problem was not as severe as it could have been. It really only indicates that telecom and power are holding up well. Does it look like the situation is less dire than it did prior to the CDC? Most definitely. Can we exclude a level 10? Maybe. A few more days required to do that. Are we still on a plausible course leading to serious problems? Most definitely.

Something should be restated here: don't go disassembling your stashes today. Only a few percent of the questions have begun to be answered. It's possble that this 7:00 PM EST = 12:00 midnight GMT issue is still very real. We still have issues pertainig to the IRS, oil, erosion of infrastructure, banks, enterprise software problems, etc. Let us not forget that a huge percentage of the computers of the even in Japan have not successfully passed the test. With that said, I will be a little surprised if stuff doesn't surface from places like Russia.

Happy New Year.

The pollys are rubbing themselves with glee, and the immature ones are trying to prove how smart they are by gloating. Yet, we haven't seen GMT rollover, the virus attacks, terrorism, or normal business and manufacturing processes yet. It is way too early.

To focus on just one thing for now:

Try to watch for problems in the supply chains, which in many cases span the globe. Many (or most?) of these are small to medium-sized businesses. Surveys showed enormous numbers of these as doing very little to remediate or replace systems, except as FoF. Further, they are vulnerable to the condition of the infrastructure of whatever country they're operating in. Supply chain problems can take some time to manifest themselves.
