As the clock ticked past midnight, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders stood in darkness -- but only because they were about to enjoy the largest and most impressive fireworks display ever seen in the country's history.

Contrary to the predictions of doomsayers, the lights did not go out and the phones did not stop working -- something which will come as a relief for the many other countries watching events in NZ with a weather-eye.

A predictable and typical response. I'm glad. I hope it lasts. It still does not negate the fact that there will be fails. In fact, they have already start to occur. Let's hope that the failures will not be in systems that most of us depend on.
