word of sabbatage and more on Limmerck

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

This is a post from another forum. The poster said that it was directly taken from the nerc.com status page. I have not gone to nerc.com yet to confirm it, but I'm on my way.

A bomb threat was received at the Southeastern Power Administration Thurmond 322 MW hydroelectric power station in South Carolina at 15:00 EST, December 30, 1999. The incident is under FBI and local LE investigation. The Pacific NW DC Intertie was taken out of service at 20:53 PST, December 30, 1999 by physically loosened tower guy wires. The tower is on the ground. This appears to be a deliberate sabotage incident. Repair is under way. There has been no loss of customer load. Limerick Nuclear Unit No. 2 tripped at 01:10 EST, December 31, 1999. The cause of the trip is known and is not Y2k related. Power supplies remain adequate due to moderate loads and available generating capacity in the area.

There is in fact a tower on the ground but it has not caused disruption of electrical services.

Sec. Richardson on NBC this morning spoke of an attempt made on a Bonneville power plant (Oregon, I believe) where "some wires were cut."

NERC status report does confirm above listed information. Thurmond Hydro Plant is located in Elbert County, on the border of GA-SC. Local newspapers are looking into the situation, however, it may be some time before we get an update since they are weeklies.

The status report also indicates that Duke Power's Catawba Nuclear Unit No. 2 tripped Thursday evening around 6 pm. Duke spokesman said Catawba No. 1 is running fine, along with Duke's five other Units. All should be operational, with the exception of Catawba No. 2, through the rollover period. Catawba No. 2's output is approximately 5% of Duke's total generating capacity.

The Duke spokesman says he's looking forward to an uneventful evening. A press conference is slated for tonight at 9 pm. A followup press conference is schedule for approximately 30 minutes after rollover. I'll pass along anything new at that point. (If I can get on.)
