Electric Service in San Jose

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I received this email from a friend in San Jose CA this morning:

I apologize for this off topic post, but I feel I must tell anyone who believes Y2K will be a non event that I just recieved a message on my machine from the electric co. to not expect power for the first 2-3 weeks of the new year and not to panic. No power usually means no water. I live in calabasas, CA.

Check the map, San Jose and Calabazas are separated by some 400 miles. I am also very doubtful that P & G and E (which serves San Jose) would take time out to send a message to your friend saying that there would be no power for a fortnight.

Calabazas (which is in SoCal) is served by SoEdison if I am correct, at least not by P G & E. I am afraid that it seems out of character for any power company at this late date to message selected individuals about power outages when their whole demeanor the last months has been "no problem."

I think more information is needed but until then, we will put this in the unsubstantiated rumor pile.

Peace Farmer is absolutely correct. PG&E would never send an e-mail message out to anyone stating to "expect power to be out ANYWHERE!" If the power is going to be out for any length of time, PG&E would go door-to-door and warn people. PG&E is very big on public relations and this is not their policy to send out an e-mail of this nature. Here in our town, PG&E has one troubleman standing by JIC there is a problem. BTW, my husband works for PG&E, and has been an employee for 28 years.

Bardou...I have a question regarding Oroville Dam. It is my understandng that power generated there is sent south to the Bay Area and LA and not for local use. Is this correct? Also regarding the generating unit at the dam, I suppose everything there is hunky dory?

According to the Mercury-Register, the dam is AOK, FWTW. Also, you are correct, the power that is generated at the Oroville Dam is sent to LA doubt to the Bay Area) along with our water from the dam. (There's a big stink going on now about that) Since your out towards Bangor, no doubt you are on a well. OWID, will have the spigots on at their Kelly Ridge WTP reservoir on Kelly Ridge Road if the power goes out (free of charge). You can also fill up water bottles at their office on Oro-Quincy, but Kelly Ridge will be closer for you. I'm concerned about the dam since it was built in the 60's, and government owned and operated. Haven't seen anything out of the ordinary going on, we'll wait and see.
