Dear friends:
Below is a Y2K rollover schedule describing where Y2K midnight falls
as it moves around the world. Times are given in US Pacific Time, US
Eastern Standard Time and Greenwich Mean Time, December 31st and Jan
1st. The schedule was compiled by fmeyer@frii.com, mostly from info
courtesy of the http://www.timeanddate.com website. The EST and GMT
times are from fmeyers; I added the PT times for myself and my
neighbors.
Some people are advising that we not use the phone or internet from
Dec 31st to Jan 3rd or 4th. I have mixed feelings about that.
Certainly we don't want to overload communication lines and websites
at this critical time just to satisfy morbid curiosity or entertain
ourselves. Nor do we want to block needed emergency communications by
being the ten millionth person to call Aunt Martha to wish her a happy
New Year. And we could hurt ourselves: There is a real possibility
of increased virus attacks during the rollover, which online computers
may be more vulnerable to. Still, I am uncomfortable with the idea
of our grassroots networks cutting off connections with each other at
this critical time so that the only data available is newspapers, TV,
radio and government (all of which have dismal records handling public
Y2K information). Grassroots Y2K networks are, after all, only a tiny
percentage of the traffic on phone and internet lines. And yet the
aforementioned problems are real. This looks like a real judgment
call -- so follow your own inner guidance.
Whatever media we each choose through which to view this unprecedented
event, I hope we can be aware that we are co-creating the next step of
our future together, even as we watch -- and definitely as we talk and
act during and after whatever happens. This won't be a movie. It will
be real. And thus we will all have something to do with whatever
happens next. May our way forward become clear to us, as we are each
called to make our difference in the days and weeks (and months and
years) ahead.
