Reuters: CBOT clearing body in final phase of Y2K readiness

When the head of Y2K preparedness for the Chicago Board of Trade Clearing Corp. entered the information services field more than two decades ago, he did not picture himself working around the clock on the weekend of the transition from 1999 to 2000.

``This is the date I thought maybe I should be retired by,'' said Brett Paulson, who is chief information officer and in charge of making sure the date change goes smoothly at the CBOTCC.

Instead, Paulson, along with about 20 others at any given time, will spend this entire weekend at the CBOTCC, which is responsible for guaranteeing the integrity of every trade at the Chicago Board of Trade. The CBOTCC protects market participants from losing money if the other party to a trade defaults.

CBOTCC employees, who began preparing for the year 2000 date change about four years ago, will run hundreds of tests in the next two days to make sure the clearing corporation's computers are ready to handle the transition.

A little late, wouldn't you say?

Maybe it's just me. Everyone claims they started their remedial work two, three, and here four years ago, yet nothing was mentioned that there was or could be any problems. Now all of a sudden, work started FOUR years ago still isn't finished.

Guess I just don't get it.
