SYSOPS......I think most people here are concerned......the site grows for over 2 years and then BINGO, the main site is left with nothing but an obtuse goofy message, no link to the new URL and total silence from Phil.........

Can you please find out for us.....or give me a phone number and i'll call Phil myself and report back here.

Thanks.

We'll find out.

Think it will be... will post alternatives later tonight.

Craig,

Please let the Sysops handle it. I've already been in several rounds of communication with Phil.

Phil chooses not to post a link at this time, because he feels the same thing will happen again. A group of people almost trashed his server. He is protecting it and other forums that operate on Greenspun. He wants a Pentium to handle "our" archives, because that server is full, on a "free" service, and we take up about "900% of the space..." his words.

Shift Happens.

Be grateful we have this Back-up Forum, for now.

Got ideas on manifesting that Pentium for him anyone?

Diane.....

What would be so terribly wrong in copying 50% of the archives or categories onto a disc, then deleting them from the Server to save space? For example, delete everything (after copying) that is over 30 days old for now. Space problem taken care of......

About the other problem.....robots.....I've already made suggestions about that, that are easy to implement and workable

Don't tell me that he can't set a maximum # of requests on his Server software that will be handled at one time with an error message being sent to additional requests that come in once the limit is reached.......this is not rocket science......

Sorry, it stretches credibility completely that this problem only surfaced December 28th just when we were about to enter the event we have been discussing for over 2 years.........and his excuses about not putting the link in are VERY WEAK indeed in my opinion......

It might wash to those that are web technology illiterate............but still reeks of other motives.

Like most things in life there are reasons and excuses..........IMHO, Phil is using excuses instead of valid reasons for not making the link.

Craig,

It's Phil's "choice."

Live with it for now. Doesn't mean we like it. Or agree with it. He's in the driver's seat. And he's been quite clear about what he wants.

*Sigh*

BTW... there were massive spamming attacks all day yesterday, and at the time the forum went down. Cumulatively... you figure it out.

Phil's just as tired of it as the rest of us are. Why don't you have a "chat" with your DB buds and talk them into staying "home" for the holidaze, huh? That would be helpful.

Diane.....

This forum has become like family. Regardless of the outcome, its my desire maintain a relationship in the year 2000. Could someone set up an account to purchase MIT a new server for this thread? Phils' problem belongs to MIT. He has provided us excellent service at no cost. I'm ready to pay my dues.......

I'd be willing to chip in a couple hundred dollars toward equipment for Phil. However, it will be a while before he gets it. I believe we will make use of it even then. Meanwhile, let's offload what we have backed up to CD (after confirming that we can access it OK). We can re-install it after we get the new equipment. Who else will contribute? We don't need to hear from those who don't want to contribute. There is no pressure on the unwilling to participate.

for what it's worth- IMHO- this forum has been a wonderful source of info and support- would hope the Sysops can speak with Phil and see what is needed- and then propose something to "the group"

at the risk of seeming dumb...duh- how do I put this alternate TB forum into my "favorites"- I can't get it to do that, unlike the other TB forums- and I don't know the actual site address- got here thru Ed's link- what's the 'address" for this site??
