Fast Company Article--Ilene Sorensen "The King of Kreme" by Charles Fisherman, October 1999. page 262-278.

I read this article because it was about food. The King of Kreme is a doughnut factory. It is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and sells over 3 million doughtnuts a day in facilities across the United States.

This article was just fun to read. It told about the history of the King of Kreme factory. It explained technology and the cutting edge business practices combine with techniques and equipment from the past. The King of Kreme article facility dates back to 1947. They say "build on the past." I am a believer of this. Not everything needs to be changed. A person needs to plan the future but think about the past.

Consistency is the utmost priority. All the ingredients come from the North Carolina facility. The flour is tested for moisture, protein and ash. Wheat varies throughout the country--but Krispy Kreme says their doughnuts will not. This is also the message the Extension Service promotes in their mission. We want people to know they can count on us. We have reliable, research-based information for people. We want people to know we are there and provide and outstanding service for others.

We have all heard of the Dunkin' Donuts. Krispy Kreme out sell them 10 to 1. Dunkin' Donuts have 24 times the stores. Why does this work? Fisherman states that making the doughnuts takes tradition and technology and lots of hard work. Again this is why Extension is where it is today.

Another NEA and I were talking about this. We feel there are those people that try to get by as little as possible. Then there are others that work extremely hard. We feel that the hard workers will reap the benefits in the end. I plan on sharing this with my family. (A good lesson)
