PREP QUES: RE: CERAMIC FILTER & WATER TASTE

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Rollover/Back-Up Forum : One Thread

I posted this question yesterday, and now our prep forum is down, just when we most need it to complete things! Can someone tell me whether their water had a strange, foreign taste, somewhat like the smell of the ceramic filters? Am I getting something from the ceramic that will go away in time, or will the water always taste that badly? I've run three fills through, and hope when I check the third batch tonight that it is more normal. I've read others who've been enjoying better tasting water than ever before from their filters. Any ideas?

Ceramic probably shouldn't change the taste. A carbon filter will make it taste better.

You'll need to put four or five gallons of clean water through the filter candles to flush out the dust before the taste clears up. Give it some time.

Elaine - I have a Berky. Washed the containers thoroughly as there is a film that is on them inside (maybe some kind of packing protection). I ran 3 full tanks through filters and by the 2nd run through it tasted really good, ran the 3rd to be really sure everything OK.

These ceramic filters hold an amazing amount of water, when I tested my Berky it took a week to dry out the filters again.

again I will reply:

When I first tried my Katadyn Drip Filter Unit (pretty much the same as your "Aquarain" or whatever it is), I got that "ceramic' taste.

After I let 10 gallons of water filter through the set of 3 filters, it was clean, pure and tasted great.

don't just rinse the filters, put the thing together, fill the top with water, let it cycle, dump out that water, do it again.

This will only happen to a NEW set of filters.

let us know how your THIRD batch comes out.

I can confirm that I got the taste from my Katadyn ceramic hand-pump filter, but it does go away after a few gallons.

Thanks, guys...you all are so great at helping! I am going home from work with a smile, knowing that the water WILL taste better, and real soon. Bless you as we enter these uncertain times.
