Three french nuke power plants close down

Hi Folks:

Todays headlines include the closing of three nuke power plants due to possible flooding from severe storms. I don't understand the words "closed down" when it comes to nukes. We have discussed this topic many times and agreed that the reactor can be taken offline but the plant must continue to operate due to core temperatures. I assume the media's use of "closed" applies only to the reactors. Am I correct in my assumptions?

I take that to mean these nukes are no longer providing power to the french grid. French Toast anyone?

Chuck, The term ususally used is "shut-down", and that means inserting the rods in the core and stopping the nuclear reaction. The plant continues to operate with offsite power, your assumptions were indeed correct.
