Koskinen is speaking from the Gov Y2k Center

Yikes!

What should I do if the phone doesn't work?

"Just hang up and wait until the demand dies down"....

yikes

To his credit, Kosky may be partially right. Ever try to place a long distance call on a major family holiday (e.g., Easter, Mothers Day, Christmas)? Chances are, you got a message from the long distance provider similar to this: "I'm sorry. All circuits are busy now. Please try again later." Of course, with Y2K, chances are pretty damned slim that the problem will be solely too many people placing calls.

-- Phread (lurking@y2k.com), December 28, 1999.

"All circuits are busy"

Yep, that's what I would expect to hear. I've never not gotten a dial tone. If I don't get one after midnight, I wouldn't assume that it was because of too many people picking up the phone.

"What about panic"

"It should be important that everyone be prepared for a few days without modern inconvieniences....prudent..."

What about systems that DO fail?

"There will not be any way to tell if a system does fail because of y2k, or if it was just because the system was fragile and old to begin with..."

yikes

My head is spinning from this report!

-- needaspindoc (spinning@y2kspin.com), December 28, 1999.

"There will not be any way to tell if a system does fail because of y2k, or if it was just because the system was fragile and old to begin with..."

Huh?

-- (RUOK@yesiam.com), December 28, 1999.

Did someone call a Spindoc'?

BTW DavePrime, you quoted from Kosky: "...everyone be prepared for a few days without modern inconvieniences...".

Was that a Freudian Slip? Or did he really say that?

Sorry, I just gotta know.

-- Spindoc' (spindoc_99_2000@HeadDown.Now), December 28, 1999.

read between the lines. They are doing everything but saying straight out that we are screwed. On one hand they say "don't worry", then the next they say "be prepared" in a falsely jovial tone.

-- Jess (alisaunde@aol.com), December 28, 1999.

Why don't they just come right out and say, "We expect a lot of problems to occur starting at midnight, but it's important to remember that none of these problems will be y2k-related"?

I mean, sheesh, the meat is so mind-numbed that it'll say, "uh, OK, thanks for the advice!" -- without so much as a second thought.

I bet a zippo lighter is very Y2K proof....can see Kosky being burned at the stake now..."This is not related to a real fire!"

-- Satanta (EventHoriz@n.com), December 28, 1999.

Gaaaawwwd! It's no wonder that 90% of the population "don't get it," they are brain dead! Even the lady that was doing the interviewing didn't know the difference between an operating system and an office software program. She said someone she knew was using Windows 97. The guy had to explain it to her that there is no such thing as Windows 97, and he was using Office 97! It's hopeless.

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), December 28, 1999.

Did any of you giys hear the quip about -- "Y2K - which stand for Year 2000 Conversion" I just about s#!* my pants hearing that ignorant crap.

-- Tyler Durden (Tylerdurden@fightclub.com), December 28, 1999.

Can someone please explain to me how you can bring down a phone system simply by picking up the phone to hear a dialtone?

That does not compute. Remember, we are not talking about actually placing a call. Also, the "all circuits are busy" message only comes after you have actually dialed a number.

Santana,

I bought a Zippo(tm), extra Ronson fuel and flints just for the Y2k Tribunals. It is VERY Y2K compliant.

"There is not any way to tell if a person died because of Y2K, or if it was just because the person was fragile and old to begin with and would have died anyway."

I wonder if those will be Koskinin's words when he's questioned about the death toll which is going to result from the mis-leading on this issue.
