OT ... Windows Geeks, I need help!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I've been lurking around here since May of 1998, and rarely post, but the last few weeks, I've been trying to set up my own "command post" to follow the roll-over on Dec. 31. I've got my scanner, shortwave receiver, TV, and this computer, with which to do this. I've spent a bunch of time with Windows Y2K downloads and backing my system up etc., just so my system can be in the best shape as possible before the event. I hope someone here knows how to correct my problem...I'd like to get this fixed w/o doing a recovery, because I don't want to have to reinstall all the Y2K fixes...

I have Windows 95 (B). I used to have a problem when deactivating the screensaver by hitting "any key" or by moving the mouse , the screen would flash and go back to displaying the desktop, but it would be oversized and have large icons. The only way to correct it was to re-boot. For some reason, I have not had that problem for months. But the other night, I played a game, and as I exited the game, the screen flashed and when the desktop returned, all the icons were large and the windows are too large. Re-booting does not help and I've been everywhere on MS help sites and HP help sites to find a solution. BTW I tried all the resolution settings in the DISPLAY box and also re-loaded my video drivers. Anyone who can help?

This problem doesn't keep me from working, but it is a major inconvenience, as I have to spend alot of time re-sizing stuff and horizontal scrolling etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Let me add, THANKS to all the forum regulars who've been here the whole time, it's been great just listening. I've learned so much.

Chuck, Diane and any other sysops...THANKS for your efforts the last few months. You deserve more than your pay!

I'd like to name all the people here, but I'd miss too many. A "Less than a BITR" to you all!

TO ED YOURDON:

Thank you so much for founding this forum. I've read your online essays, but never did purchase your books. I found this place by the recommendation of the NFIB of Ohio, in their Feb 1998 newsletter. I've been here since. By far it's the best one on the net.

If Y2K is severe, you will probably never know how many lives you have affected for the better. My best to you and yours.

Try a new video card.If your old one is still under warranty you may get it repaired or replaced for free.If you intend on using your PC you may as well get a new one because it will take 4-6 weeks for a mail-in replacement

Hi dave,

This could be a tough one. Do you have a "custom application" to set your video resolution, or do you just use windows properties? Do you use the "quickres" feature of tweak-ui?

Also, have you tried to install the "standard VGA" driver yet?

Dave,

Sounds like you are on the right track. It could be that you are trying to run your display at a setting or resolution that your video card doesn't fully support.

You say that you have reloaded the video drivers, but did you first *delete* the old drivers from the system directory? First, go to the video card manufacturer website and download the latest driver. Then go to Device Manager and remove the Display Adapter. Then go to the system directory and delete the old driver. Reboot and when Win95 finds the video card, change the path so that it can find the new driver.

Try the driver out at 640X480 256 colors first, then to 16 bit color, etc., to see what results you get. Finally change it to 80X600 res and 32 bit color ( if card supports it) and see what happens.

If this doesn't work, it could be a hardware problem and the video card may need to be replaced.

The Y2K patches for the MS OS don't have anything to do with what you are experiencing.

Hope this helps!

and I agree with Sysman, try the default driver that comes with WIN95, too.

Have you checked the Start Menu settings? On Start Menu click on Settings, come down to Taskbar and Start ...click...there should be a box to check Small icons on Start Menu, or some such thing...

If it is already checked, then follow the indtructions for default drivers posted by others here.

Sometimes if my Win 98 crashes hard enough, it screws up the settings all over the computer...I just have to reset everything.

HI, go yo your windows directory and look for an older system.ini file . the older one will will be ... system.000, system.001, system.002 etc. rename the old system file (pre display trouble) -- system.ini. these old system files are auto backup done by windows when things are changed in your system settings. this should solve the problem.

Uninstall the game(s). Get used to old-fashioned card games and board games. You're spending too much time sitting on your ass at the computer, anyway. As am I. -- :o)

Thanks for all the answers. I tried most of this, including deleting adapters etc, then letting windows detect by itself, but I haven't tried the directory yet. Wasn't sure what to look for there. I'll give this a try tonight. Gotta go to work.

Thanks again

Dave
