I am severely allergic to cat dander. I heard that Maine Coon Cats lack that allergin in their dander that makes the allergies. Is this true?

Hi Jennifer!

I too am allergic to cats, just about all types, breeds, etc. I have a MC that is now 14 mos. old and have not had a problem with allergies at all. They have a very different type of fur -- extremely soft and fuzzy. There is a more dense, shorter layer of fur and a longer top layer. I also have a friend who is very allergic and she seems to have no problem being around him either.

I've really put my allergies to the test with my kitty -- lots of kisses and nuzzling his fur and no problem. They are the best cats. I highly recommend getting one.

Good luck! ~Denise

Hi,

I have to say that I have a one year old MC that my niece's boyfriend is very much bothered by. (He sneezes alot.) I also have two other cats that he is not bothered by; they are strays. My recommendation is to visit a Maine Coon cattery, or go to a cat show and hope someone is kind enough to let you pet their MC and see how you react personally. Everyone is different. I think the only cat everyone with cat allergies can tolerate completely is the one with no hair. (I forget the name of it)
