Why the strange silence about December 28th?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Shoot, a couple of weeks ago all we heard about was the surety of martial law being declared on December 28th.....anyone who disagreed was shrugged off as a Polly........

It's now December 27th......seems to me those doomers parading that date around are keeping their paranoia in check as they don't want to be embarrased tomorrow when nothing happens........

Who were the people promoting that idiotic story and where are they now......stand up like men and admit it.......

Or like typical cult members are you going to change the date because God told you to?

"all we heard about was the surety of martial law being declared on December 28th..... "

I believe if you go back, what was predicted was that something would happen on the 28th. I don't believe any or many predicted what that would be. Could be a fireside chat about y2k if anything.

Why don't you just wait until tomorrow?

-- Matt (mattd97@hotmail.com), December 27, 1999.

This will probably be taken seriously here.

Most serious discussion on this forum described the Dec 28th date as pure speculation & rumor.

Related, but separate, there seems to be some sort of 3-day window in the financial world that first starts crossing the 1999/2000 line on Dec 28th (or is it Dec 29th).

-- Anonymous999 (Anonymous999@Anonymous999.xxx), December 27, 1999.

Please provide quotes and links showing who proclaimed with surety that martial law would be declared on December 28th. I do recall threads mentioning anonymous rumors about this, and I also recall many recognizeable posters (pollies and doomers alike) refuting the claim, or otherwise indicating there was no confirmation. Since you're the one who has made this allegation, prove it. Or, begone like the troll you are rapidly becoming. By the way, Craig, what would Jesus do, oh hypocrite?

-- (X@x.xxx), December 27, 1999.

I believe that it was a "rumor" reported often here as a possibility by some. Quit being so lazy, Craig and do a little research if you are really interested. It is all in the archives. I get very tired by diatribes by folk like you who are too incompetent to do a little checkiing for themselves. It is obvious that you don't really care about the answer. You just like to bitch.

Oh and God help you if you are ever wrong, son. And for your information, I was not among the vocal minority here posting about this "rumor". But, hey, GO LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF!!! SHEESH!!!

You obviously have nothing better to do. But I do, good night.

Typical "bait and switch" tactics of the polly trolls. Ignore.

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), December 27, 1999.

Craig, I've been waiting for you to make some thought provoking statements or predictions about embedded technology or give the forum some indication as to why you think things will go so well. Why don't you shut your trap for a minute and give us some intellectual discourse on why you believe the way you do. Scared that you don't know shit about interdependent technologies? If you spent one quarter the time doing research rather than making stupid comments you might be ready for the next century.

Craig,

It's my understanding that "Day One" contingency plans for many non- military government agencies begin on December 28th. Personally, I think it would be foolish for the government to declare a national emergency tomorrow, because doing so would might increase the chances of last-minute panic.

GAO report on "Day One" contingency plans:

World Net Daily reported a few weeks ago that FEMA would go on full alert status on December 28. The article is probably in their archives.

-- Lornna Mitchell (doone@digital.net), December 27, 1999.

There ARE troops staging in various States on the 28th, beginning their "round the clock alert" until rollover. That's no secret. Most of them will probably be in place by the 30th. And as far as I'm concerned, those two counties who have (((Prematurely))) announced a state of emergency for the 31st may just have well proclaimed ML is being implimented on the 31st. More will surely follow.

4 days. Who is going to ride out the stock market through rollover? Do the long-time and savvy investors have that much nerve? I think that many will bail 'en masse at the "last minute" and that last minute is iminant! An enormous drop could start chaos. Could it happen tomorrow?

Did you make it past grade school?

No, God says don't change the date, it won't be necessary; but, change your attitude.

Expect the Central Business District (CBD) of big US cities to be in a similar state with access to certain areas only by previous written authorization from Local Law Enforcement Offices and also requiring appropriate identification.

Carefully controlled access will last for a time period of 24 hours beginning shortly before the rollover, Friday 12/31/99 6:00 am, and lasting shortly after rollover, Saturday 1/1/00 6:00 am. But don't be surprised to read reports, after the fact, of time periods being extended.

Craig,

December 28 is not a special day for the President. However, it may be a special date for any number of religious extremists or terrorists.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Right Wing attempted another coup attempt on the Presidency...this time with live ammo instead of non- impeachable charges.

Hope the President has thought of this possibility.

Why doesn't everyone wait until tomorrow when the All Knowing All Seeing c4ixxx comes back to post. Remember, he/she/it said that it would be back on the 28th to post something new.

I think another reason for interest in December 28th is that the government's Y2K Information Coordination Center is supposed to begin 24-hour operation tomorrow:

White House Readies Y2K Center

Updated 2:58 AM ET November 9, 1999

By Jim Wolf

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House lifted the veil Monday on a $40 million operations center designed to track how the world fares as it enters the technologically challenging Year 2000.

The center, in old Secret Service premises two blocks from the White House, will launch 24-hour operations on Dec. 28 continuing through the first few days of the new year or longer if conditions warrant.

Brian Kilgallen, head of the center's public outreach arm, told reporters that Y2K-tracking operations "probably" would continue at a reduced pace until March 15 to monitor any Leap Year complications for automated systems.

Jokingly dubbed the Y2K "bunker" by congressional staff members, the facility is on upper floors at 1800 G St. N.W. It will coordinate data collected by existing government emergency centers and, for the first time, the private sector.

Arrangements have been made for the sharing of centralized information by the following industries: electric power, banking, finance, telecommunications, oil, gas, airline, pharmaceuticals and retail industries.

OK OK OK!!!! You got me. I'll EXPLAIN the significance of December 28. (sigh)

Here goes: it is my wedding anniversary!!!!!!

It is also the birthday of my dear Mamaw, who passed away in January of this year at the age of 86.

Check my FEMA PDF documents linked above to see what FEMA has planned for tomorrow. Federal boys can react to anything , y2k related or not, based on this report.

-- Hokie (nn@va.com), December 27, 1999.

December 28, 1957, my birthday. I'll be 42 tomorrow. That's the only significant thing for sure that I will stick with!

Don

-- Don (mrmtgman@aol.com), December 27, 1999.

and as every good person who has read that most significant tome in the known and unknown universe, The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the ulitmate answer is 42. Thanks Don.

I think the seriousness of this post matches the seriousness of Craig's question.
