British Berkefeld question

I bought a BB last Spring, and am just now getting around to setting it up - at least I didn't wait till the last minute...lol. The instructions for conditioning the filters say

Fill upper chamber, place on lower chamber. Open the valve/tap and allow water to flow through the filter to waste for 10 minutes. Allow filters to stand unused overnight. Open the tap again for 2 minutes, and allow to run to waste. The filters are now ready to use.

I don't get the part about opening the tap... even if the tap is closed, the water continues to filter into the lower chamber. After 10 minutes, am I supposed to empty the top chamber too? Otherwise it doesn't make much sense... just running an entire batch through (and tossing it out) two days in a row would do the same thing? Feeling stupid today...........

Look, just fill the top, let it all drain into the bottom, and toss that water. Repeat. Empty the residual in the top, and you're good to go.
