Many Not Ready For Y2K

By Steve Gold, Newsbytes. December 27, 1999

Infoliant, the Year 2000 database service, reports that despite all the preparations, the IT industry is still not prepared for the Y2K IT issue. The fault, the firm said, lies at the feet of IT managers within major companies.

Kevin Weaver, the firm's executive vice president, said that despite the billions spent on Year 2000 remediation over the last three years, many companies have neglected major components of their IT infrastructure.

"I'm shocked at the number of inquiries we are still receiving from businesses just in the past week," he said, adding that they appear to have left out much of their desktop and network systems, focusing almost exclusively on mainframe and other mission critical applications.

"The reality is that, if a network goes down and e-mail isn't working, that's pretty critical too," he said.

Weaver added that what is compounding the problem is that many technology companies are racing to determine whether their own products are compliant.

"As Infoliant's Delta Report has shown, there have been 1,156 changes to the compliance status of hardware and software products in the past three months," he said, adding that time is running out and it will be virtually impossible for call centers and help desks to handle all the calls that could come in.

"The real issue is that of time, time that it will take to determine which product may be at fault and how to find that product's compliance and remediation information," he said.
