Portable, small, easy to use, good quality

I am searching for a portable photography scanner that is light and compact. Easy to use for technology deficient people like myself. To be used without being attached to a PC would be nice, so a laptop didn't need to be carried. It should be able to handle photographs of all film types. I do genealogy research so old B&W photos along with everything else before, after and inbetween should be useable. (peace on earth and no hunger would be nice too!) Stefanie

Scanning film would be the trick. If it's just photos, black/white negatives, and slides, a digicam capable of good macro focus and maybe some sort of copy-stand jig for holding the camera over the photos would probably do. I've heard of people sticking a toilet-paper tube with a slot cut in the front of it for the film onto a Nikon 950 to copy slides with. Just point it at a bright light source, and snap the shutter. Color negative film is the biggest problem, as you need to do more than just inverting the color to get decent images.
