U.S. Debates How Much to Air Y2K Terror Threat

The U.S. State Department issued a second world-wide warning of potential terrorist attacks against Americans overseas, however officials say they do not want to exaggerate unnecessarily Americans fears over their safety at millennium and other celebrations. "Clearly, we are concerned and on guard," one U.S. official said. "But at the same time, we don't want to spread alarm unnecessarily among the public. There's no doubt it's a struggle." White House spokesman Joe Lockhart reiterated that the government has not received any hard evidence of definite plots against the U.S. In addition to concerns over terrorism, law-enforcement officials have been preparing for possible criminal activity from internal groups such as computer hackers or the far right. "There's no question there's a lot of anxiety on the radical right about the date change," says Mark Potok, a spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group that watches the activity of such groups. "A lot of this is kind of defensive -- they're fearing the end of the world or the coming of martial law."

Gee whiz, so they're preparing based on rumour and anecdote? Sounds a bit, you know, paranoid and extreme to me.

They'll be buying extra food and water next, wait and see.

Sound to me like the 'debate' is what degree of bald-faced lying is appropriate.
