Italy could plunge into New Year chaos if the worst fears of a group of scientists and technocrats prove correct.

A recent survey ranked Italy's preparedness for Y2K disasters on a par with Honduras and Peru. The fear of computer glitches sparking major power cuts is matched only by fears of an economic collapse as banks, finance houses and mercantile exchanges are affected.

Rome in particular will be under enormous stress. More than a million visitors are expected in the city and services are not expected to be able to cope.

Augusto Leggio at Italy's Y2K commission said: 'Italians, as a rule, generally don't plan.'
