Racial violence because of Y2K?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi,

Going through all of the discussion on this forum I have read on numerous occasions that many of you expect food riots. I was wondering if you fear that Y2K could also lead to racial violence because of power-outages and so forth. I hope none of you are offended by this question, it certainly is not meant to be negative in any way.

Hi Rogier.
If there are power outages and so forth I expect an amount of violence, some of which may be spurred by racial tension. If there aren't power outages or so forth I expect an amount of violence, some of which may be spurred by racial tension. That's the way the mop flops, unfortunately.

Is the food going to riot? Oh, I certainly hope not.

Rogier,

Did you read Project Magiddo? It's online. The FBI gave it to InterPol, so I guess now these organizations are concerned about racial violence.

I disagree. I suspect that if there is violence caused by y2k then it will be instead across socioeconomic groups, the "haves" verses the "have nots". Look at Venezuela. If a man's children are starving and someone is hoarding food, then there is conflict. It's not about race.

I pray there is NO violence, like the other folks here. But it is clear that in a crisis spontaneous violence orchestrated by persons without resources will be directed towards persons WITH resources. Survival.

Proj Megiddo's focus instead was on persons who may "use" any societal chaos generated by y2k as a "cover" to act out their group's agenda. What I think that means is that any y2k induced outages are not causing racial violence, but that the FBI sources suspect racist organizations are instead plotting to take advantage of such chaos to act out their agendas. Do you see the deliberate plot rather than suspected spontaneous reaction re: racial violence and y2k?

The report specifically identified that such organizations may, if the infrastructure remains intact, deliberately assault the infrastructure ("proactive" not "reactive") so that it would generate the societal chaos as a cover for their operations. This is why the FBI I think told InterPol to focus on these groups pre-rollover. Find out which persons plot to proactively generate chaos...

Makes sense to me... I want them to stop the bad guys. I am all for that! The trouble I have with Proj Megiddo is that I don't think the author of the report composed the document in an intelligent manner. It seems to read more like a schizophrenic ranting, pointing fingers here and there and everywhere, rather than clearly and succintly identifying from the get-go and then explaining the key components which red flag a group as potentialy dangerous.

The report was in my opinion what we Americans call "ass backwards" because it began with blanket statements about groups then buried in later paragraphs the key characteristics of focus to help police identify such groups. For example, the report implied Christians are racists, and so dangerous, LONG before it got around to explaining that it is really the racist groups who (1) distort religious/Christian doctrine, and (2) plot proactive infrastructure terrorism to create chaos, which are a potential risk for violence.

When something on the surface appears irrational then it is important to look for a hidden agenda. The structure of the Proj Magiddo document was blatantly "tabloid" rather than educational, which leads me to think that either the author was just plain stupid, or had a hidden agenda to manipulate a responce from InterPol which was other than what the report purports (I hope and pray he was just stupid).

Side note: And isn't presentation of a schema prior to specifics the preferred educational technique for childrn, and not adults? Go figure.

yah sure. i was just waiting to become racist. this is a perfect excuse. maybe the government will be able to create the impression that we "survivalists" not only do violent acts to make the lord return but we will also quickly become hate mongers, racists, and terrorists. geesh.

-- tt (cuddluppy@nowhere.com), December 21, 1999.

If we get a bunch of slack jawed yokels, be they white, brown, black or whatever, that start sh*t BECAUSE of race, let them all kill each other off so we can be rid of them, and leave the rest of us alone. That's one looong sentance.

Reminds me of gangs. I could give a rats a$$ about "gang violence", I just wish they would work an their aim so they would just hit their target(rival gang member) and not the bystanders.

Sorry, TT, but you're too late. We already ARE considered "hate mongers, racists, and terrorists." But you left off "right-wing, mad- bombing, millennial 'hoarding' wackos".

Geez, get with the PROGRAM!

-- Porky (Porky@in.cellblockD), December 21, 1999.

During such frightening times, it's reasonable to anticipate ANY kind of tensions coming to the surface.

So the question to you, Rogier, is why would you think that racial tensions would be different than any other kind of tensions?

-- Bokonon (bok0non@my-Deja.com), December 21, 1999.

I'm not predjudice...I hate everyone.

Seriously tho...I have freinds of many colors and backgrounds, but if someone kicks in my door I will get very violent very quickly.

Boy you best be worried more about ending up at Uncle Aldoph's Club Nazi than what we be doing over here.

Rioting food? Is that why we shouldn't live within 5 miles of a 7-11?

-- Bob (bob@notforlongjob.com), December 21, 1999.

LISTEN UP TROOP! If we had know it was going to be this much trouble, we would have picked the d*** cotton ourselves. AT EASE! LIGHT 'EM IF YA GOT 'EM.

(1) On a serious note, when there are food and fuel shortages, IF the available food and fuel is not distrubuted fairly (or the distribution merely appears to be inequitable from ANY racial viewpoint), some individuals may take umbridge...and begin violent activities. It is important that not only fairness, but also the appearance of fairness, be maintained.

(2) As we have seen in the Balkins, when lawful order is removed, some individuals/groups may take the opportunity to revisit old grievances, violently.

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), December 21, 1999.

Mad Monk pointed out one very possible reason for racial violence; the perception that help is being unequally distributed. Such perceptions have come up before in some major cities over electric power restoration during blackouts, over snow removal during winter storms and in recovery from natural disaters.

In such locales are mostly urban and there are usually high racial tensions in place. Any social stress event could be the trigger for a full-fledged riot, or worse.

And I'm afraid I can name several US cities that are, in my view, very likely to suffer racial violence. Just sample the websites for the major newspapers in the US major cities. I'm sure you'll see that a city which doesn't have news stories detiling some problem reflecting racial tensions will unfortunately be the exception.

Hoping I'm very wrong on this aspect of Y2K:
