Is Your Boss Taking "Some Time Off" for Christmas?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

We all keep looking for indications of future events. If the boss is cashing in his retirement and taking off this week, that could indicate his leanings. Now this doesn't mean he really knows anything, but it does indicate his degree of confidence. Anyway this might be an interesting exercise.

I, for instance am leaving town and going to our "lodge" in remote eastern Washington on December 26th and as far as customers and crew are concerned, I'll be back on January 4th, our 1st day back at work after the new year. Whether I come back to Seattle or not depends...

What about you & your boss, hmmm?

Of course it might mean that he is just taking some time off for Christmas.

Our CEO and founder quit 2 months ago, sold his house and belongings, and sailed to Oregon to live on his wife's parents cranberry farm. Funny thing is, NO ONE makes any connection.

In our company most top management will be away for the holidays. We also will have no vehicles or computers on the road on the 1st or the 3rd (1st actual bus. day) Bottom line is that nobody knows for sure what will happen. The positive side is that the U.S. gets 16 hours advance notice as the time zones move east to west starting at New Zealand.

My boss quit a month and a half ago. I WAS planning on quiting right before Christmas, mainly because I'm ready for a new career and I want to be with my family as much as possible for the holidays. Also because I expect Y2K to create some serious problems. But......I've decided to just stick it out and see if I still have a job after the new year. I do know that my company will be postponing our weekly paychecks for the 31st due to Y2K.

Randers,

Hi, neighbor. I'll be in my "lodge" waving to you from the Southern border. And, I am the boss...

Taking time off in the latter part of December is SOP for many people, especially for people who get more than two weeks of vacation per year.

Yup, I'm taking off. In fact, I've been off for several days. I gave the staff a chance to take time off, but NO ONE wanted it. I even suggested that it might be a good idea for them to store up some "essentials", but NO ONE did. I even gave them a special bonus to buy stuff with and THEY WENT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. I give up. I'm at my country place and really enjoying the peace and quiet. However, I think in a few days I may have several guests. That's ok. I am a doc and have a small office staff, small family and some "essential items" to share.

No, my boss is too stupid to take New Year's Eve off....(y2k won't cause any problems - after all)....He can deal with all our non-compliant computers and a small business with no contingency plans..

So,, luckily that means I can take off !

The Pres. and VP (wife/husband) resigned two weeks ago. They took on partners for expansion/capital (United Tile in Oregon) and were trying to buy back their company. Negotiations went south and they walked. My boss, (the vp) was a sort of GI. I forced him to read the Senate 100 day report (summary) and the International Monitoring Report. He new at a minimum we would be facing tough economic times soon. Cash out there percentage in the company at the highest peak in sales to date? Its what I would have done.

The next week the Partners show up, I sat in a meeting with the Pres. of United Tile and his "mis" guy. We reviewed all of my current projects, our Y2k efforts being the big one. (((splutter, splutter)) the Is guy actually said this... and I quote, "yes, we're planning on looking into that over the next couple of weeks." PLONK All I could do was nod my head casually, and say hmmm.

I am now on Holiday for the next Eight Days. I will pop in Wed and Thurs before the roll, Install the final patches that Microscarce has available, close out the ERP for Calander Year. Back up the systems. Bring them down and unplug everything.

Then....................................hmmmm
