RM to MPEG???? Anyone???????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Is there a way to convert Real's format (.ra or .rm files) to mpg for the purpose of making a vcd?? What apps, if any, do I need. Will the frames per second be compatible, etc..

I haven't seen ay program for going backward in compression with RealMedia files. I don't think it would be a good idea. It would be like taking an audio cassette and trying to make CD quality audio from it. There's not a way to touch up video like that as far as I know without the original file.

You can get an .avi screen capture utility (and if it doesn't record audio, you should use something like totalrecorder for sound and then you can combime the two in paeditor) and then convert it to mpeg!

HI! i read the reply's to that poor mans request for an rm to mpeg convert i myself have been searching for a month now for one with no luck... how every he didnt say he wanted better video quality did he, no he said he needed a converter.. so what does making it have better video quality have to do with it... nothing... because at 352x240 the difrence between mpeg and rm clarity on a tv will be no difrent... and avi cap programs suck on slow machines the video records choppy and laggy, and in some parts slowed down then the audio video dont match much... i've tried that... there are some realy good hackers/coders out there who can dycrypt/recode numberous programs/files people found a way to decrypt DVD... SO WHY CANT SOMEONE MAKE A DAMN CODEC FOR RM TO WORK IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER! thus making rm's able to convert because most converters read directx's codec library... DUH!...

No hacker has made it because rm sucks! If you need it, why don't you make it and not just say DUH!?! You make it sound so easy, u r a dumbass.... and to say a rm file looks the same on a tv almost made me shit my pants laughing. LOL

-- 2 bizy laughing (hacker-duh@huh.org), November 16, 2000.

I think you misunderstood the man you damn cocksucker . Take your brain out of your ass and put it back in your head, if that's not asking too much. You're right about one thing, rm does suck. That's why people want to be able to convert it to mpg, cause if you have the right tool, you can just edit the video once it's in mpg and make it look a LOT better. And by the way, I know how to convert this; it's pretty damn easy. Too bad i'm not telling. Now you can get pissed.

.RM may suck as a format but all of that damn companies software sucks even more. However if you have a .RM file you have no choice but to install their crappy software. If you could convert it to a different format(or there was a codec that allowed you to play it in media player).......

-- Robert Marlton (rkm100@soton.ac.uk), January 24, 2001.

Where the hell are these damn converters been searching for months. It's about time some damn company or hacker creates a program that does this. I would like to play some RM files on VCD, but you just can't burn it that way.

www.vcdhelp.com has all your answers. They have the screencap program for capturing an RM and hints on using it. They have all the XXX -> MPEG information.

I have a brother in the industry, who's worked with MPEG-type data compression/chopping. I'm also interested in converting the RM format so that I can finally annihilate realplayer from my precious computer, which it rapes, and still watch my RM videos. I'll get back to you on the feasibility of a codec, as I'm seeing said brother this very weekend. (Said precious computer exploded. Call in the expert...) Meantime, sit tight. Incidentally, if you're interested in capturing individual frames from Realplayer, it can be done but not on every machine. Using the printscreen button to capture and dump a screenshot produces wierd effects from Realplayer, unless you change certain settings. In the View menu, edit the preferences under the View tab. Turn off the advanced features of the video card, and on many machines it can be done. Audio is easy to capture, and can probably even be done in sound recorder. If you're interested in converting something with a low framerate, like some cartoons, this might even be something worth considering for capturing a whole animated sequence; otherwise, it's likely to be too laborious.

You people are really too touchy. I swear to god we are all hust morons. www.HugeMoron.com

The problem is that RM is it's own video format. Everyone considers RM as if it were a variation of AVI or MPEG files. For an example, DiVX, VCR, Huffyuv, and Indeo are a form of AVI compressions. The same goes for MPEG's, there is MPEG1 & 2, as well as quicktime, that that is a diffrent wierd group to itself. Now there is a AVI2 that has come out that is used with many digital camcorders. Since they are not of the same family of video, conversion is very difficult. Mpeg took a long time before it was able to be easily converted to AVI. Since Real Media is propriatery, there code has not been able to be studied, making it almost impossible to program an application to convert it easily. There are a couple programs that claim to convert it, but not to my success. The main one I hear of is Tinra. If something comes out that works, I would be glad to hear about it, but until then, it looks like screen capture programs are the only option.

program called tinra turns rm and ram into avi....

-- (blahblah@blah.com), July 25, 2001.

first, unless your rm file is small, like around 10 megs or less, or you have an rm spliter tinra isnt worth bothering with because it will not convert more than the first 10 megs of the video into a 2 gig file(yeah huge isnt it) but then after your done you stil have to fix it(ugh!!!!!) so having a video thats over 30 meg is a real problem I hate real media

-- just my 2 cents (notme@nother.com), July 30, 2001.

is there a rm to mpeg converter now... ???? stupid rm pissed me off well thats all i have to say =P

-- ERrRRRR (CRAP@hotmail.com), August 21, 2001.

Tinra is also a big piece of shit. To use it, you still have to have Real Player 8 installed, defeating the whole purpose of converting. I have a lot of anime episodes in .rm and frankly they blow my ass. You can own a damn Athlon 1.4 Ghz and still not get a decent framerate out of Real. So screw it all. Find whatever file you're converting on the net under mpeg, because I don't think real is giving up their codec information any time soon.

-- BMXTiger (bmxtiger@yahoo.com), August 22, 2001.

I am searching my ass off for an MPG to RM. If anyone can hook me up, please do so.

P.S. everyone go to winmx.com, every music video in history in MPG and MOV format, even more, but im to tired to name them all, I even seen the movie Joe Dirt on there, but its a damn big file, every type of media you can imagine is downloadable. DOWNLOAD WINMX, best I have seen

Here's a thought that can be filed under afro-engineering: Hook the video out of an All-in-Wonder card to the video in of the same card. Play the rm file and use the digital VCR feature to record the video input. Make sure RealPlayer completely covers the TV window. I tried this, but my digital VCR is busted so I don't know if it would work. Plus, when the TV window is visible you get a cool mirror effect at no extra charge.

To convert rm/ram files to mpeg or avi while increasing quality download EO Video from http://www.eo-video.com/. It will not only increase quality of the rm/ram files, but put it into a format you can make dvd's from where you could not before. Only problem (if it's really a problem) is that it increases the size of the file about twice what the original was (2m.rm becomes 4m.mpeg) Also converts mov, avi, wmv, mpg, whatever.
