Which SLR digital cameras are compatible with copy stand use

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I want to buy an slr type digital camera but have one concern that I'm not sure will be satisfied with either the Olympus c2500 or the Sony DSC770. I need to be able to use the camera on a copy stand without me having to stand on a ladder to look down through the view finder. My Kodak DC120 allows the LCD to flip up so that while the camera faces down I can easily preview the image on the LCD at eye level facing the copy stand. Will either the Olympus or the Sony do this? If not, which slr digital camera will? If none then maybe I can sacrafice the slr functionality if I still have manual control over shutter and aperature and is convenient to use with a copy stand. I do a lot of on-site shooting of crowded antique stores (room shots), small jewelry and prints (copy stand needed) as well as individaul furniture pieces. Any advice on digital camer comparisons will be helpful. I do both web site and print media so I need high resolution. Thanks for your help

I use my Sony FD-91 regularly on a copy stand. It has replaced my scanner for producing graphics for both web and print use. It has a flip out LCD screen so that you can adjust the position and lighting on the copy with just a glance up at the camera. I do a lot of web site work for small shops, and can produce a web page on the spot for the client with the FD-91 and my laptop. I use a pair of 100 watt halogen lamps on the copy stand and the camera has no trouble adjusting white balance. It also performs well when glass and jewelry are photographed on a light box with the on-camera flash. It will fill the frame with a postage stamp at about 2 1/2 feet from the subject.

Of the two cameras you selected, neither has a flip up lcd. Another SLR like digicam is the Canon Powershot Pro 70. I believe it can be found in the same price range as the other two. It has the flip up and rotatable LCD. However, it does not have a Through The Lens (TTL) view finder. No built in Flash, but it does have a Hotshoe. I believe it has the same resolution as the Sony.
